The Art Of Attention Getting

June 22, 2009

I've noticed that you read my blog a lot, THANKS! Lemme know if there's ever anything I can do for you email me, twitter me, or facebook me

Michel Fortin started a really good conversation about whether or not Larry Winget went overboard on his blog about the guy who stole his Facebook username.

The short story is Facebook offered everyone the chance to get a Facebook.com/YourName address for your profile. Lots of people lost their names to other people who had their name and others to slicksters who stole other people’s usernames – And thats the part pissing people off.

This guy who stole Mr. Winget’s username says he did it to try and get Larry’s attention. That he was doing him a favor by holding the name hostage from anyone else and that he thought it was worth a free consultation. Well he sure got Larry’s attention!

However there are better ways to get attention, like ones that won’t make you doosh of the day in the blogosphere. Michel was talking about how you shouldn’t try to get attention at the expense of others. Which I totally agree with, but  I felt a little like “well what is the right way then.”

So I’m going to pick up where Michel left off and elaborate on some ways to get attention without being annoying.

Getting The Attention Of A Potential Mentor

I got my big start online by getting the opportunity to intern with Russell Brunson. What I didn’t do was steal a domain of his and then try to sell it back to him. Instead I contacted him and told him how hard I would work for him.

Then later on when he needed a new VP of marketing for his MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR COMPANY I got his attention again. This time I wrote out all my ideas for how I could help him.

Before I get to the point let me give another example…

I now have Matt Bacak on speed dial and we chat on instant messengers about our sites. Again I didn’t try to extort him or scream over all the others that wanted his attention. I just started promoting his products and sent him case studies of results I got from his methods.

I’ve done it over and over again… Russell Brunson, Dave Lakhani, Matt Bacak, Keith Baxter, and many others. I’ve gotten some of the best mentors in my industry because I put their needs before mine. Instead of asking them to help me, I told them how I would help them. In return for helping them they helped me.

I learned of this first in a book written by Robert Greene called “The 48 Laws Of Power” and I highly suggest reading it. I use the lessons from that book everyday of my life. He talks about the “position of power” and how it’s always changing.

Positions of Power (My Favorite Lesson Of All Time)

In every discussion, conversation, and relationship there is a hidden passing back and forth of power. If you know what to look for and concentrate though you can see where the position has stopped at and bring it back to you.

For example, you want a mentor…

Well the person you want to mentor you has the position of power, you are the one needing it. No one wants to physically give you their “power ball” so you have to earn it from them. If you help that person do something they couldn’t have done with you all of a sudden that position of power is transferred to you.

Now that you have the “power ball” you can pass it back to the mentor by asking them to help you. The other important thing about positions of power is EVERYONE ALWAYS WANTS IT (especially wives! haha jk).

You can get whatever you want when you practice being aware of positions of power and how to gain them.

Getting The Attention Of A Customer

In a competitive market the most basic marketers try yelling louder then everyone else to get their customers attention. However all they are doing is intimidating their customers and once everyone is screaming and shouting the prospect is just annoyed and jaded now.

For example take a look at the history of banner ads. First they were just blocks of text, then they became colorful images, then they made them animated, then blinking, and now today we have full audio inside some banner ads!

Because everyone was screaming and shouting in the banner ads the prospects learned how to tune them out. That’s why the best banner ads today are ones that look nothing like a banner ad.

Instead of giving themselves away by blinking, shouting, and being colorful the best banner ads camouflage themselves as useful information, games, questions, and spots of interactivity. You can learn from these banners too.

If everyone else is using a salesletter… What if you used an article? In fact some of the smartest marketers are now using blogs as salesletters. For example check out http://mywhiteteeth.greatblogsabout.com

The prospect has the position of power. They have the money you want… If you put a salesmen in front of them or the equivalent they’ll hug and squeeze their “power ball” to never let it go. However, the prospect still has some sort of problem maybe it’s yellow teeth, maybe it’s toenail fungus.

If you can camouflage your sales process as a solution like a blog post instead of a salesletter then the customer will walk into your arms. Once you show them you know where the solution to their problem is, then all of a sudden the “power ball” magnetizes itself to you and you earn the position of power.

One last example because this is HIGHLY EFFECTIVE customer getting information is postcard marketing. I’m a fan of it but it’s going down the same path of banner ads on the Internet. Now the postcards are yellow, orange, pink, and red. If you open your mailbox and see a neon pink postcard… Whats your first thought?

SALES CARD! RUN!!! DON’T EVEN LOOK AT IT, JUST THROW IT OUT!

However, if you see a normal sized envelope, handwritten, and addressed to you then it almost certainly gets read. If when you open it you see a newspaper clipping that has a post it note addressed with your name handwritten on it… You’re going to read that newspaper clipping.

It looks like a friend sent you something that you need to see. This kind of marketing is called a tear sheet and there are several companies (LumpyMail.com is the best) that will do it for you in mass, even with the handwritten post it notes.

But That’s Too Complicated/Expensive

All of us inherently know that if we send a gift basket with a personalized DVD video prsentation of our product it’s probably going to work better then a neon pink mass print postcard. However, most of us have the mentality of just doing enough to get by.

You might think well I need the money fast, I don’t have time for all that fancy stuff. Which makes me think of the guy speeding down the road in his car rushing to get to work before he’s late and he gets pulled over by a cop. Sometimes it really is faster and more effective to do things right the first time then to try and cut corners or do the “rush it and pray” method.

So before you think about your next project ask yourself if there might be a more creative way of going about your business. Often times you’ll see much higher results from less work if you just stop and think about how you can be different from everyone else instead of trying to be bigger or louder.

  • Hi Justin,

Don't know how I stumbled across your blog. I was link hopping for a bit and ended up here. Funny how that happens.

This was a high quality post. A lot of truth to it. Particularly the entire underlying premise that if you want the attention/respect of the other person think about how you can help them first and foremost.

Which, of course, is why so many people are ineffectual at this because people tend to place their own interests front and center.

As for clicking around and reading some other posts, looks very interesting. I've never site flipped before, but I did purchase a hugely successful undervalued site back in 2004 using some techniques I learned in the original Traffic Secrets course when it first came out.

It's like buying undervalued real estate but only online!

I found your comments on postcard marketing interesting as well. I am just starting a major postcard campaign for the first time. It's my first foray from purely online marketing to direct mail.

    Keep up the quality posts.

    Regards,
    Dan Ho
  • Thanks for writing this. It was very helpful. Keep writing.
  • Hey Justin hope your move is going good,

I've recently had first hand experience with this, I offered to create a wordpress theme for a potential mentor, after I created the theme he was so happy, he offered to talk to me for an hour about my online business... and I didn't even ask him!

This stuff works... give first and you shall receive!

  • Hey Justin! i think the perfect example of this post is what you did for the siteflingmafia sales page... I hate reading, but I read every word of it... and I did so without a guard because it wasn't a 'typical' sales page...

In fact I think everyone should go read it now if you haven't seen how Justin help Alejandro make $6k fast... it'll blow your mind... but read every word... study it... because it's a perfect demonstration of the above post...

I wish I would've had this post 6 months ago when I first found you... would've probably got the apprenticeship quicker... I wanted the apprenticeship but just tried the 'screaming louder' approach...

The coutless emails weekly offering free labor, the bazillion twitter messages... the stocking on ustream and skype... and all I had to do is give you $50 and 30 days!... lol... anyways... talk to you soon man...

  • Hey Justin,
The cartoon was a great example of the saying that a picture is worth
a thousand words. One of the things I have learned from you is that I
have to look at things differently. There have been a number of your
post where I though dam! how did he think of that, or dam! why didn't I
think of that. I still remember reading the post you did on how the Porn
industry Market their products. There are so many examples around us to
take from and tweak, or put in a more creative way. We just need to look at things with different eyes.

One trap that I had fallen into was thinking that to be different and to
get noticed I had to have some kind of a gimmick, the crazier the better.
Coming out of corporate America I have gotten a great business education that can be applied, or used in creative ways in my online business. I guess
that for some of us it's easy to forget that we are running a business and
we need to run our business like a real business. Built on a solid foundation
using proven business principles and systems.

One of the books I am currently reading is: "High Probability Selling -
Re-inventing the selling process" by Jacques Werth and Nicholas E. Ruben.
In their work shop, they ask a number of questions. I think the following
question covers some of the points you brought out so well in your post:

    - "What will you do to get the prospect to buy?" -

To which they get responses like; "anything, whatever it takes." It's get better; "Scare them, beg, manipulate, con.." And even eventually "...lie, grove, kiss ass..." They are all pretty bad but the one that stuck out to me was the lying. "be insincere and unauthentic" which they explain meant fooling people into thinking that you liked them and were interested in them and dishing out complements at every opportunity they got.

    Justin I think you summed it up well in your last paragraph when you said;
"ask yourself if there might be a more creative way of going about your business." And "just stop and think about how you can be different from everyone else instead of trying to be bigger or louder."

One of the best things that has happened to me, since I got laid off from my last JOB and decided to take my Internet business seriously is that I now have limited funds, which has forced me to find creative ways to get things done. Being "The Lazy Jamaican" that I am, I am forced to use systems that work and to listen to mentors, like you and Chaunna, who know what they are doing so that I can build this business the right way. I guess it all boils down to getting rid of the noise and doing the right thing, in the right way.

Thanks for keeping us on the right track.

You the man Donovan... You should run with that "lazy jamaican" character too! "I was to lazy for the corporate world so I quit my 9-5 and looked for lazy ways to replace my income... Here's what I found!"
  • Hey guys, hope the move has gone well.

LOVE the newspaper idea - I just had a run in a local paper with an article about me so I'm DEFINITELY using that ; )

In fact, I was thinking about having an article about services for businesses, and then send that, along with your SEO Client-catcher letter (http://sitefling.com/blog/step-by-step-system-f...) - what do you think? Is it a bad idea mixing both?

    Perhaps I should split-test both.... ?

    Cheers.

  • The newspaper clipping brings back memories. I remember receiving it about 2 years ago.

I remember thinking, "Man...this is the luckiest guy in the world....to be working with Russell Brunson is amazing."

But of course, another lesson here is that luck has very little to do with success. When you are focused on success, opportunities silently show up. All we need to do is take notice and take action.

The main point is true too. Duly noted. I know that Joe Vitale says that sending a gift would get their attention too. If someone says in their blog that they love a certain product, then send it to them. It shows that you are paying attention to them and putting them first. Besides, who doesnt love getting gifts. At the very least, it will get your foot in the door.

I know you mentioned in one of your blog posts that:

"Hint: A marketer who’s name rhymes with Hussell Stunson likes white chocolate covered strawberries from berries.com"

So yeh, there are alot of ways to get someone's attention without coming off too strong.

I need to remember the gift giving tip and begin implementing it with the marketers who provide me with so much value, if only to say thanks.

  • First off...

The Site FLiiiing definition addition to the top right hand corner of your blog rocks dude! that's sweeeeeeet!

    I agree with you Shawn,

Someone actually contacted me about a jv partnership today too that i have never talked to in my life before.

His product was not a bad idea and it was unique but I was turned off by the whole... "here's my sales page and here's how to promote it" partner approach...

I thought to myself I wouldn't promote it simply because...

    1. I haven't seen the product so i don't know the quality or value of it!
    2. I don't know him! I have never even tweeted with him at all!

I noticed that the article in the blog post is you on a sea doo... Nice!

I agree with you about "being louder" ...

It's funny because the other day I noticed that the tv commercials were louder than the tv program.

I thought "this is annoying" so i muted during the commercials from then on.

I used to watch commercials and b/c they wanted to be "louder" I completely muted them...

I guess being loud does have consequences...

    Great post man...

I appreciate the value and advice you offer...

Hope the move to florida is smooth :) Have a great night!

  • Justin Brooke
Yeah being loud just gives you a sore throat and people run away from you. Yet a silent guy with $10 worth of sidewalk chalk drawing a message in the middle of the street gathers a crowd...
  • The first thing I saw of this post was the image and I laughed. It is so true. I found it interesting, a few weeks ago I received an email from someone trying to get me to JV with them, but it wasn't addressed to me, they didn't offer me anything, and they didn't even tell me what the product was about. They just said stuff like "guaranteed high conversions and low refund rates" and "high commissions". Right...everyone promises that.

Then I just received another email from him today, addressed to me this time (one step closer) but still telling me nothing about the product, offering nothing but high commissions, etc. He just gave me a link to the members area, but I don't have time to go figure out what the product is about and determine whether or not I want to promote it! At least tell me what it is about and who it is targeting so I know whether or not to waste my time actually examining the product!

And like you said, you need to offer something first. That is the first rule of getting JV partners. I have found that to be totally true. You offer to help someone, and you do what you can to help them, and they will just offer to repay you and JV with you. Sometimes you don't even have to ask!

I love the whole "powerball" concept. I have never heard it explained that way, but that is a very effective method of explaining this concept! It's really too bad more people don't understand it.

Also, the thing about "fast money" is very, very true. I recently did a survey of my subscribers asking if they had any traffic questions, and many responses have been simply asking how to get fast traffic. They want immediate results, within 15 minutes. They don't want to do something that will take a month to kick in, even if it will make them 100X more money. They just want results now.

I have found that the things I put much more work in, I may get no results for days, or even a month, but once I do get results, they totally own the results I get when I just do something really quickly without thinking about it.

Thanks for the awesome post Justin, I hope my comment wasn't too long. :P
