Hey Justin,

Great Blog post.

I totally agree with you on starting out small, I try to start
with maybe 2 or 3 products, 3 to 5 keywords each, and
only one keyword per one ad at a time.

Your 7 Steps are excellent.

I generally have one, or sometimes two, action words per
Adsense Ad, as I find an Ad that converts, I will split-test
my action words and squeeze pages that the person is
sent to. Following the results then helps me increase my
conversion rates even more.

You are right on with what you say about targeting the the
'name' and 'the product'. The only thing I would add to that
it is also a good idea to target the 'URL' with, and w/o 'www'.

You can almost always get those clicks for just pennies
and a ton of people get text emails and have to copy and
paste to get a site to come up. If they use the 'URL' - and
then do a Search, your Ad will be in Adspace #1 because
of the relevance.

So all you have to do is add 'BONUS' to your Adsense Ad,
and include a nice bonus consisting of a package of things
you got for free from a couple Giveaways and, even if they
copy and pasted someone else's Email Ad to get to that
Search Page, your Bonus Page Ad will definitely get a look-
see.

Thanks again for the Post and your 7 Steps, truly excellent.

Thanks Justin,
I had just started reading and researching Google Adwords, and then I see your email in my inbox. Thank you so much especially for #7. TURN OFF THE CONTENT NETWORK. I had not seen that tidbit of advise anywhere, and I think you probably just saved me a ton of money.

Right on the money Justin! Excellent tips - thank you. PPC is the fastest way to the consistent cash flow if you know how. It's one area where you can't know too much. There's testing and tweaking and thinking about what you want "them" to do and asking yourself, "what are they looking for?"

One of the best posts from you, Justin, really. If you ran a survey, you would see that a lot of us can take this and as many posts on being sharp on PPC as you can send us. There is, of course, more sharpening tactics to PPC and we can all benefit from this.

Cheers,

Dude,

You might also want to save some $ by making your ads run only when your target market is awake and clicking, say 9 AM to 10 PM (unless you're selling beer, in which case it would be 11 AM to 1 AM!)

Thanks for the post, I'm glad I read it. I bought some course where the guy was saying he likes to set his daily limit at $300 to $500 a day, but if I can only afford $100 a day, that's ok to start, and that my goal is to almost break even, because that can probably be tweaked to profit. Whaaa? I returned that course and have been avoiding anything PPC since, figuring that's only for the high rollers. Your advice makes a lot more sense. Sometimes you have to hear something from someone else before you realize your first instincts were correct.

Thanks bunches for the PPC tips. They have really helped to clarify things. I have a huge phobia against PPC, as I was one of those that lost my shirt and pants a few years back because I didn't know what I was doing. I just couldn't afford to do that again so have avoided it completely. I am with Paul on some of the adword e-books we have read. Most are full of nonsense fillers, written by people that it seems obvious are not using adwords correctly either. They are parroting someone else that doesn't know either! Any way, sorry to be long winded, you are appreciated, Justin.

Sounds like a lot of you are going to love the 7 tips once you try them out. Most people starting out with PPC want lots of clicks but that usually costs lots of money.

When I started out I did everything I could to stop people from clicking my ad unless they were going to buy. So I would write ads like...

Buy This Joomla Video
When You Buy This Joomla Video
Lesson You'll Build Sites Quickly. $35

Granted I just whipped that up in .2 seconds but you should get the gist. No one who clicks on that ad is unsure of what they are going to see on the next page. They have subconsciously agreed that they are ok with buying your product at the price you said.

They're visiting your page to make sure it's going to solve their problem. So they are already a potential buyer you just have to not drop the ball when they get to your page.

Combine this tactic with only bidding on product names to start with and I would be VERY surprised to see you lose money.

P.S. Don't just promote the latest greatest launch or the same products hundreds of other affiliates are! Do some research, find your own niche, and you'll be swimming with the current instead of upstream.

I have bought a few PPC ebooks explaning how it works but these digital products always seem to be lacking in real life situations. I'll give your suggestions a try...

I used a small daily budget and got some clicks but no sales. ALL of my PPC campaigns COMBINED resulted in ONE sale! Even at $0.05 per click I lost money! Finding the right keywords to target is tricky!

Awesome post as usual.

When I started out, I lost $500 in PPC and that was pretty scary. So starting small is always the best tip for PPC.

Great info on PPC. I've done some PPC, broke even, but was bidding on higher priced keywords. If I'd have had this lower cost keyword approach it would have been a winner. The key, as you mention, is to track your ads/profits/costs. That's how to keep yourself in business and make money. And ditch the keywords that are not working.

If I’d have had this lower cost keyword approach it would have been a winner. The key, as you mention, is to track your ads/profits/costs. That’s how to keep yourself in business and make money. And ditch the keywords that are not working.

Good advice. I have touched on ppc marketing, won a little and lost more...but never really took to "very low daily budget" approach. It will take a lot longer but is much safer for sure. Other avenues to go for are to test campaigns in yahoo/MSN before going to google, as this is cheaper too and converts better (apparently :-) ) and go for longtail cheap keywords. Some tools help with finding those of course. In any case, don't give up!

Great words of advice, Justin.

PPC is an expensive habit when you are just getting started, my advice to people is not to run away from PPC, but certainly to do as much research as possible before starting. Then, as you so rightly point out, start small.

I would be interested in seeing more on PPC from you!
