“My buddy John tried PPC and lost $1,000 overnight and made no money…”
“PPC works but if you make one little mistake it can cost you a fortune…”
“Using Google Adwords is like attaching a vacuum to your bank account…”
These are the horror stories I hear people mentioning when PPC is talked about in the marketing/webmaster forums. Which kind of weirds me out because PPC is one of my favorite ways to spend money.
Like I would literally prefer to spend money on PPC over buying some new fun “man toy” or tech gadget.
So I got to thinking… carefully so I didn’t hurt myself
Why do my friends and I love PPC soooooo much but this other huge section of the IM world runs screaming the other direction?
Who’s Making PPC So Scary?
Well, my favorite and everyone’s favorite group to point a finger at is the “Guru’s!”
And they are partly at fault with their ridiculous “You can make $50,000 a day with PPC… Just set your daily budget to $500/day… And bid on this ultra tough keyword”
Uhmmm… If I had $500/day when I first started using PPC, I WOULDN’T HAVE NEEDED TO USE PPC!
Most of us when we are just starting out online are fantasizing about $100/day or even just our FIRST SALE. To be told to have a $500/day budget on PPC is just straight up redonkulous.
So yes, some of the reason why rookies are so scared of PPC is because there is just some REALLY BAD courses for sale on the topic.
1-800-Sav-A-Guru
To their defense they really aren’t trying to target the “rookie” with their salesletters. Some of them definitely are and should be tarred and feathered. However, the good guys who are selling courses about PPC are targetting established business owners who want to learn and exploit a new marketing channel.
It’s kind of like the Dolphins that get caught up in the Tuna nets. The Tuna guys aren’t trying to catch the Dolphins but they get caught up in the dragnet.
AGAIN… Some guys are evil and purposely say things like “even a beginner” can do it. But a lot of the time it’s just the rookie seeing the big numbers and chasing a dream. Shame on the irresponsible guru and shame on the unrealistic rookie.
Who Else Is At Fault?
Dare I say it… GOOGLE!
OMG now I’m going to have my house broken into by the Google samurai ninja hitmen in the middle of the night… It was nice knowing you!
It’s true though and you really can’t blame them or be mad at them. They are running a business and Adwords is their biggest profit center. Sure they are going to teach you how to use it, even for free. However, you better bet your ass that they are going to teach you how to spend the most money in the quickest way possible!
Mr. Goog surely ain’t going to tell you to put up a $2/day budget cap, target only 3-5 keywords, and put the price of your product in your ad.
Because if they told everyone that then they wouldn’t be so dang rich!
However, I CAN TELL YOU THAT because I don’t have a vested interest in how much you spend. My vested interest is that your PUT DOLLARS IN YOUR POCKET.
Because when I teach you something and you make some money off of it then you’re prolly going to buy something off me, tell someone about me, or even just think I’m a pretty cool guy. That’s my secret, the bag is out of the cat… ermmm… maybe it’s the cat is out of the bag?
7 Steps To Making PPC Work For You
- Set a super low daily budget that you can afford. I started out with just $2/day and you can go even lower than that if you want.
- Research the cost of keywords before you make your campaigns so you can start with just the cheapest ones and work your way up AFTER YOUR MAKING SALES!
- Don’t try to get lots of traffic… Traffic sucks… Sales is what you want… LOTS OF SALES! So put the price of your product or the product you are promoting in your ad. This will slow down the clicks and make sure people that DO CLICK are already ok with the price.
- Target only product names – People are 10x more likely to buy something when they are typing in the actual name of a product or model #
- Don’t use lots of keywords – Start out with just a handful that you can manage and that are cost effective.
- Don’t target the whole world with your ads. When I start a campaign I target just the U.S. to start out with and then when I see things working I slowly start adding more countries while watching my stats closely.
- TURN OFF THE CONTENT NETWORK – Don’t even think or say the words Content Network until AFTER you have a couple profitable normal campaigns.
What My Math Teacher Taught Me About PPC
Regardless of the cost of your keywords or how awesome your keyword is there is still a general conversion rate to worry about.
WHOA… What?
Ok so a good salesletter will convert 1 out of every 30 – 50 clicks into a sale…
If you are paying $0.50 per click and need 30 clicks to get a sale that’s $15…
And if you only make $20 per sale then well that kinda sucks but at least that situation made you money…
What if you had to pay $1.00 per click… Now you lost money!
So when you target cheaper keywords like ones that cost you only $0.05 – $0.25 it means you can afford more clicks to make it to that sale. Sure that awesome keyword your buddy told you about might get lots of traffic but it might be too expensive.
Give yourself a fighting chance and research your keywords costs first!
If you listen… If you DO what I’ve said in this blog post then you can effectively put training wheels on your PPC marketing until you’ve found your balance and can start scaling out. As with anything I talk about on this blog it just doesn’t work if you just read it.
All it takes is action and action builds confidence!

Hey Justin
There are lots of ways to do PPC, but I think starting out small and targeting buyers is definitely the best way to get into PPC.
I’ve been testing Yahoo and Microsoft (Bing) PPC recently, I think it’s important to realize that there are options besides Google especially if you don’t know how to create targeted ads, landing pages…
Thanks for the advice – I enjoy reading your blog!

Great words of advice, Justin.
PPC is an expensive habit when you are just getting started, my advice to people is not to run away from PPC, but certainly to do as much research as possible before starting. Then, as you so rightly point out, start small.
I would be interested in seeing more on PPC from you!

Good advice. I have touched on ppc marketing, won a little and lost more…but never really took to “very low daily budget” approach. It will take a lot longer but is much safer for sure. Other avenues to go for are to test campaigns in yahoo/MSN before going to google, as this is cheaper too and converts better (apparently
) and go for longtail cheap keywords. Some tools help with finding those of course. In any case, don’t give up!

Great info on PPC. I’ve done some PPC, broke even, but was bidding on higher priced keywords. If I’d have had this lower cost keyword approach it would have been a winner. The key, as you mention, is to track your ads/profits/costs. That’s how to keep yourself in business and make money. And ditch the keywords that are not working.

Awesome post as usual.
When I started out, I lost $500 in PPC and that was pretty scary. So starting small is always the best tip for PPC.

I used a small daily budget and got some clicks but no sales. ALL of my PPC campaigns COMBINED resulted in ONE sale! Even at $0.05 per click I lost money! Finding the right keywords to target is tricky!
Man…PPC is a real tuff nut to crack. Most of my campaigns just break even. Sometimes I get lucky a make a good profit. I have bought a few PPC ebooks explaning how it works but these digital products always seem to be lacking in real life situations. I’ll give your suggestions a try…

Sounds like a lot of you are going to love the 7 tips once you try them out. Most people starting out with PPC want lots of clicks but that usually costs lots of money.
When I started out I did everything I could to stop people from clicking my ad unless they were going to buy. So I would write ads like…
Buy This Joomla Video
When You Buy This Joomla Video
Lesson You’ll Build Sites Quickly. $35
Granted I just whipped that up in .2 seconds but you should get the gist. No one who clicks on that ad is unsure of what they are going to see on the next page. They have subconsciously agreed that they are ok with buying your product at the price you said.
They’re visiting your page to make sure it’s going to solve their problem. So they are already a potential buyer you just have to not drop the ball when they get to your page.
Combine this tactic with only bidding on product names to start with and I would be VERY surprised to see you lose money.
P.S. Don’t just promote the latest greatest launch or the same products hundreds of other affiliates are! Do some research, find your own niche, and you’ll be swimming with the current instead of upstream.
Thanks bunches for the PPC tips. They have really helped to clarify things. I have a huge phobia against PPC, as I was one of those that lost my shirt and pants a few years back because I didn’t know what I was doing. I just couldn’t afford to do that again so have avoided it completely. I am with Paul on some of the adword e-books we have read. Most are full of nonsense fillers, written by people that it seems obvious are not using adwords correctly either. They are parroting someone else that doesn’t know either! Any way, sorry to be long winded, you are appreciated, Justin.

Thanks for the post, I’m glad I read it. I bought some course where the guy was saying he likes to set his daily limit at $300 to $500 a day, but if I can only afford $100 a day, that’s ok to start, and that my goal is to almost break even, because that can probably be tweaked to profit. Whaaa? I returned that course and have been avoiding anything PPC since, figuring that’s only for the high rollers. Your advice makes a lot more sense. Sometimes you have to hear something from someone else before you realize your first instincts were correct.
Don’t talk about losing $500 as a newbie..
I just lost $1200 on a campaign about 2 months ago and I’m not even that new.
Point #3 should be tattooed onto the arms of every PPC wannabe; great tips Justin

Dude,
You might also want to save some $ by making your ads run only when your target market is awake and clicking, say 9 AM to 10 PM (unless you’re selling beer, in which case it would be 11 AM to 1 AM!)
Not only do you provide good information but you have a very captivating writing style Justin.. Just love it ¡
One of the best posts from you, Justin, really. If you ran a survey, you would see that a lot of us can take this and as many posts on being sharp on PPC as you can send us. There is, of course, more sharpening tactics to PPC and we can all benefit from this.
Cheers,
Rick
Right on the money Justin! Excellent tips – thank you. PPC is the fastest way to the consistent cash flow if you know how. It’s one area where you can’t know too much. There’s testing and tweaking and thinking about what you want “them” to do and asking yourself, “what are they looking for?”
Thanks Justin,
I had just started reading and researching Google Adwords, and then I see your email in my inbox. Thank you so much especially for #7. TURN OFF THE CONTENT NETWORK. I had not seen that tidbit of advise anywhere, and I think you probably just saved me a ton of money.

Hey Justin,
Great Blog post.
I totally agree with you on starting out small, I try to start
with maybe 2 or 3 products, 3 to 5 keywords each, and
only one keyword per one ad at a time.
Your 7 Steps are excellent.
I generally have one, or sometimes two, action words per
Adsense Ad, as I find an Ad that converts, I will split-test
my action words and squeeze pages that the person is
sent to. Following the results then helps me increase my
conversion rates even more.
You are right on with what you say about targeting the the
‘name’ and ‘the product’. The only thing I would add to that
it is also a good idea to target the ‘URL’ with, and w/o ‘www’.
You can almost always get those clicks for just pennies
and a ton of people get text emails and have to copy and
paste to get a site to come up. If they use the ‘URL’ – and
then do a Search, your Ad will be in Adspace #1 because
of the relevance.
So all you have to do is add ‘BONUS’ to your Adsense Ad,
and include a nice bonus consisting of a package of things
you got for free from a couple Giveaways and, even if they
copy and pasted someone else’s Email Ad to get to that
Search Page, your Bonus Page Ad will definitely get a look-
see.
Thanks again for the Post and your 7 Steps, truly excellent.
