How To Sell Water To Fish

September 2, 2009

I've noticed that you read my blog a lot, THANKS! Lemme know if there's ever anything I can do for you email me, twitter me, or facebook me

Last night we did our usual Tuesday’s Twenty Minute Tackle live show, and I talked about one simple principal that if followed will bring success to your business no matter what industry you are in.

This little golden nugget work for CPA, Affiliate marketing, website flipping, info products, Adsense, offline, and anywhere else where you are selling something to an end user. Heck it even works in video game worlds!

Without further ado, here is the video where we explain the simple stratagem as well as answer lots of questions from the audience about making money online…

The method is simple, no matter what you want to sell you first have to know who you are selling too. Then you need to know whether they want what you are selling. If they do then you simple offer it at a fair price.

As it was taught to me years ago by Travis Sago, who said 1.) Find a type of fish you want to catch 2.) find out what type of bait that type of fish likes 3.) Put that bait on a hook and show it to that type of fish.

His metaphor basically meant that first you need to find a group of people. Meaning a niche market, then you need to find out what those people DESPERATELY WANT. Not what they need, not what they MIGHT want… But what they are desperate for… What has their hair on fire and what will put that fire out?

Once you find that, then you simply tell those people where to get it. Maybe you’re doing that with PPC ads or maybe through listbuilding or maybe you have your own clickbank product. Either way the lesson remains the same and if you apply it to everything you do in your marketing then you will always win.

As usual, this tip means nothing if all you do is read it. To turn this tip into dollars in your pocket you have to take action and action, no matter how big or small, builds confidence for more action.

Go Bigger,
Justin Brooke

  • Hey Justin

    Tracking the target customers is the basic foundation without which your campaign is a sure shot fail or to be precise a disaster. You cannot move a step ahead without it.

    I liked the title of your post... this time your title really made me laugh and more eager to read this post.

    Hi Justin,

    Great video, content right on! One thing though, forget the Acai berry stuff, if you want a real tonic which energizes, good for your gut, skin and hair you need aloe vera juice. [spammy reference to your own sites removed][Links go in the website field of comment registration only]

    We do the shows at 11pm eastern, hoping to see you on there!
  • But where do fish keep their wallets? ;)

    Well I guess it's like saying lets sell food to people, after all we all NEED food! But we also know just where to get it already! But then on the flip side, an age old economic concept is that supply creates demand, there are many things that (if we were honest) we don't need yet we end up buying. I am sure we all have something at home that we've never even used!

    Selling things that people don't need to people who don't really want them is a real talent... and perfectly possible too!

    Selling things people don't need or want would be the bass ackwards way of doing what I was trying to teach in this blog post.

    In fact I believe doing things like that should be considered a scam and most of the time I'm sure it is. What I'm talking about is finding a group of like minded people, finding out what problem they desperately want to solve, and then just showing them where to find the solution to that problem.

    For example...

    crowd =MIDDLE AGED MEN
    problem = HAIRLOSS/BALDNESS
    solution= HAIR CLUB FOR MEN

    crowd =WOMEN GETTING MARRIED
    problem = WEIGHTLOSS TO FIT THEIR DRESS
    solution= ANY WEIGHT LOSS EBOOK
  • Hi you two,

    I listened to your video, and I would love to know where to look for someone who would even fix my blog -- I like the way it looks,
    but to get someone to build a membership site in WordPress with blog, etc. or $30.00 -- I would gladly pay that. Can you give me an idea of where I would find such a person?

    Thank you.

    Baji
    .-= Baji Milici´s last blog ..WANT TRAFFIC? =-.
  • Justin Brooke
    Hi Baji (cool name!) you can go to ScriptLance.com and find
    people any day of the week that will build you a wordpress
    membership site for $30 - $50.

    It's crucial that you tell them you know it's easy for them to
    do and that you have all the files they need. For example...

    "This should be a very easy job for anyone who has installed and setup a wordpress membership site before. Once I choose the winning bidder I will send over the wordpress core files, the theme files, and the membership site script I want to use."
  • Good tip Justin...be the guy with the shovels!

    Your blog and tips should be required reading for marketers of all levels! Keep delivering the goods.

  • Sorry I couldn't make it live last night. The video was good as always. I come to expect nothing less of you two. You addressed my main problem I think, which is not going after a broader market for my flip. I focused in on a certain subject and that made it a little tougher. Thank you again for taking the time to educate us.

    Missed you on the show man! Yeah, a lot of rookie flippers take the "niche marketing" lessons they learned from affiliate and info stuff and try to apply it to website flipping but it's almost the exact opposite.

    With website flipping you don't really want a super niche market because that takes away from how many buyers it might appeal too. Just the same though you might find that one guy who LOVES websites and fibromyalgia or whatever.

    I just know that it's best to go broad or mass appeal type stuff because then you'll catch the interest of the most amount of potential buyers.

    P.S. football season is starting... hint hint!!!
  • Very interesting topic as always. I was able to sell 45 pages site with a ebook in health niche and some adsense income ($90) for $550 but can't sell template wp blog for few $ about pets. This takes practice and experience, do it and do it again. I have learned a lot, looking forward to the next one :)
    Thank you J&C

    Man the testimonials are really coming out of the woodwork today. You're the third person to day that has told me they've recently sold a website from my teachings.
  • Sarah Smith
    Hey guys,
    I like watching your videos but I hate not knowing the time. Is there anyway you can start putting in the timer that tells us how long the whole video is and let it count down backwards to 00:00, especially for us single moms? I have kids who love to fuss and scream about 2-3 minutes into every video and it's distracting, but I never know really how long the video is going to take. Most times I have to just click off and then go back in later. However, if I knew the video was only 5 minutes in length or 20 or 30, etc., it would make life easier for me (and the kidlets).
    Take care.
  • Justin Brooke
    Sorry Sarah, we don't control those videos. They are hosted through uStream.TV - We just turn on our webcam, press record, and they do everything else.

    The ones from our Tuesday shows should always be about 20 - 30 minutes long if that helps any.
  • Hi Justin

    I remember one of your first WSO's when you blew it out of the water with your "Bum Marketing" to the next level before you started your mentorship with Russell. You've come a mighty long ways since then and is what I consider one of the go to guys in Internet Marketing.

    Keep up the good work and as always...Thanks

    Roger thanks SOO much for the kind words you ROCK, lemme know if there is ever anything I can help you with.
  • That was another fun show dude! You guys are so "chill" but still so informative...and tossing humor into the equation makes it a must stop on Tuesday nights for anyone looking to learn from you!

    I especially like the "red" theme you had going on (background, shirt, Chaunna's hair). It was a bit like "theatre", especially when you teased us with a "sneak peek behind-the-curtain". lol

    I inadvertently picked up a couple great ideas for future blog flips too. ;)

    Cheers guys
    Jay
  • Justin Brooke
    Yeah now we just need a killer idea for what we should do with all those recorded shows?

    P.S. Great having you there!
  • Right on Justin.

    Always go for niche with hungry people. :-)

    anyway, what time is this kick start show now? I think you guys change time or something like that?
