How To Run An Internet Business

November 30, 2009

I've noticed that you read my blog a lot, THANKS! Lemme know if there's ever anything I can do for you email me, twitter me, or facebook me

It doesn’t matter if you are just starting out online or if you are already a million dollar player. If you have an Internet business then you need to be studying the new marketing trends and tools all the time.

The Internet doesn’t stop and it grows like a weed. One year on the Internet is like 7 years in real life.

Which is why it doesn’t matter what level you are at… You still need to be devoting at least 2-3 hours per week to studying the latest strategies and researching the newest resources.

I don’t mean you have to be buying all the guru schmuru product launches either. In fact I highly recommend avoiding 90% of anything that is being “launched.” Don’t fall prey to the “guru addiction” game…

What Is A “Living” Ebook?

To me a “living” ebook is some educational source that is consistently & frequently updated with new material. For example; blogs, forums, and podcasts.

When I first started out online I didn’t have tons of money to buy all the new courses. I had to find my information for free and it might surprise you how much TERRIFIC info is out there freely available.

No product launch, membership site, or ebook could compare to these next 5 blogs I’m going to share with you. These 5 blogs provide more KILLER and actionable information then any other single source I’ve ever read.

Sure, there are some great reports and courses out there, but these 5 blogs have been delivering the freshest and best information about running  Internet businesses for longer then some guru’s have even had their businesses!

5 Living Ebooks YOU MUST READ

  1. Problogger: (a blog that teaches you about blogging) The easiest and most reliable way for any person to start and grow an Internet business is to just simply blog everyday. Just keep putting out fresh high quality content related to your topic and Google will start to pick it up. Eventually you will start ranking for keywords and eventually start making money – no hypey secret needed. This blog will give you daily tips on how to start, run, monetize, and grow a blog.
  2. CopyBlogger: (a blog that teaches you about marketing) Once you have a business you need to market that business because a business without clients/customers isn’t really a business. You need to learn how to tell people about your product and you need to learn how to generate interest in your product. This blog will give you daily doses of the best marketing information around.
  3. Mixergy: (a blog about other business owners) Someone much smarter than me said that a genius learns from other peoples mistakes. Well this blog is nothing but interviews with other successful Internet business owners and the things that work and don’t work for them. Become a genious and learn from other peoples mistakes.
  4. ClickNewz: (a blog about affiliate marketing) One of the most popular ways to get a blog to start making money is through affiliate marketing. How would you like to learn from someone who’s been doing it for almost 13 years! Lynn Terry is the owner of this blog, has thousands of followers, and delivers high quality affiliate marketing information very consistently.
  5. SEOMoz: (a blog about getting free website visitors) SEO means getting free website visitors from search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Well SEOMoz just happens to be a whole company devoted to testing and putting out the best information possible every day on the topic of SEO. I highly suggest getting a PRO account as well if you like their blog.

Those 5 blogs will teach you everything you really need to know about running an Internet business.

From just getting started to getting money from your sites to getting more website visitors, everything is covered. Now just go ahead and send me all the money you would have spent on courses over the years ;-)

Now you just have to keep topping it. ;)
  • Absolutely amazing resources for people to learn about online business success! Was looking for something like this for a long time. Love all of 'em but Mixergy stands out for me. Thanks Justin. If things were up to me, I would recommend everyone doing business online to join your mailing list! :)
  • I knew about #s 1, 2 and 5 ...
    Checking out #s 3 and 4 now..

BTW I love the illustration: "living eBook"... hits the nail on the head. And yes I agree with it 100%... Being broke cannot stop someone hungry to learn in this day and age.

    Great post. Thanks!
  • Justin,
I could not agree with you more that starting out and not having a ton of money to buy all the new courses forces you to find information for free. And yes it did surprise me how much "TERRIFIC info" is out there freely available for the taking.

When I first started out on line, I had a job and enough money to buy all the shinny objects that was placed before me. Not until I lost my job and had no money did I realize the wealth of information that is available free of charge. I have learned and done more since that time. I still am amazed at the wealth of information that you and Chaunna give away freely to your list.

Click News and Mixergy are new to me. I also enjoy reading:

    Donovan
  • Hey Donovan sorry to hear about your job, good to know you have found some good sources of training. Chaunna and I are here for you if you ever need help growing your biz.
  • Have to always read your blog posts even when I say, I am not going to read another post again. You should have been on that list. I am definitely with Lynn, love her and then problogger too. I got to check out the others.

However there are many many other doing a great job in a big and small way and you are one of them.

Congratulations to all, including myself. I got to blow my own trumpet, no one will. If people like us were not there to read the blogs there is no way they would be ranked.
  • Thanks for recommending us for that list as well. We try pretty hard to put out the best content possible.
  • Justin, it has been a while since I have commented on any blog anywhere. The content and info that you are providing and have been providing over the past yrs has been nothing short of fantastic, applicable and true. Thanks for the resources and keep on rockin'.

    The Methodical Marketer
  • Thanks Jimmy, it's encouraging to hear your kind words. If you know anyone who needs some good solid info about running and growing an Internet business please tell them about us! ;-)
  • Thanks Justin, for this advice. I've recently decided to stick to blogging and affiliate marketing in order to make my living (instead of only building websites for others, why not build some for myself???!) and trawling through the thousands of site pages and ebooks and forums on the subject has been a major pain, and disastrous on my scheduling...

Since I trust your judgement, I think I'll stick to these 5 and go with what I find there for now.

Thanks again for all the time and effort you put into getting decent info out there for us.
  • I'm proud to have my work listing with those great sites. Thanks.
  • Hey Andrew, thanks for stopping by. Hope to chat with you some more soon.
  • Just something else to throw out there... If you are not using Google reader to capture blog feeds then you are missing out on some of the greatest free information.

I'll blog about who I follow in my Google Reader later today...
  • Wow, I've been gone for a while trying to do a whole bunch of stuff. I check back now and I see that someone else posted under my name at put a link to their website to steal traffic from my effort posting comments.

Anyways, I totally agree with the guru addiction. I've pretty much stopped buying everything. There are a few guys I'll still buy from because everything they put out is KILLER (very few though) and I actually jsut purchased your WSO because I want to know what the network is that lets you start for $20.

Other than that, I just follow people's blogs and spend time chatting and bouncing ideas off my marketing buddies. It's way more effective than buying the latest course.

Two of those sites above I've never heard of, so I gotta go check em out now.

    Shawn

P.S. Sorry I've missed like ALL the Twenty Minute Tackles...I'm out every Tuesday night.
  • No worries Shawn, just glad to see you back now. Hope your site is going well I know you been busting ass out there.
  • If that was my office (in the pic), I'd lose my freakin' mind. I get stressed out if I have unopened mail on my desk for too long. lol

Two months ago, I went out and subscribed to over 50 of what's considered to be the 'top' Internet Marketing/blogging blogs. I kept weeding them out because I only want the top 20 (maximum) that I get value from ALL the time.

I want a short list that is the "pulse" of Internet Marketing and blogging.

3 of those were top 10 for me (I have a separate list of SEO blogs and subscribe to SEOMoz ), but somehow, I didn't even see Mixergy, so my research was obviously "off" to some degree. lol

    Thanks for the tip off...
*heads to Mixergy with highlighter* ;)

    Cheers
    Jay
  • Great resources! Thanks as always for sharing.
  • Thanks Jay, Chris, and Brendan, mixergy is a super hot place to visit ain't it.
  • Mixergy is the bomb@! There's some awesome interviews in that site. Andrew Warner does a great job over there...

I highly recommend Mixergy. Download the transcripts, break out the highlighter , and create your "protocol."

    Good post my dilly.
  • Thanks Chris!
