How The Porn Guys Do Things Pt. 2

Almost 3 months ago I wrote “How The Porn Guys Do Things” and since then it’s been read by over 2,100 people. It’s one of our top 3 most read blog posts. So I thought I’d keep it going as a running series.

In this episode of the series we’re going to learn about “ABC Linking” and “Link Lists.”

What Are ABC Links?

If you’re an SEO expert you might be thinking about three way links or reciprocal linking. Although that’s not exactly what I’m talking about here. However, that strategy did in fact come out of the adult industry. Face it just about anything that works really well has been handed to us by the adult industry innovators.

So let’s pretend that you are a rookie affiliate for some adult website. You’ve got this affiliate site that was given to you by the affiliate program you signed up with, but how do you get traffic to it? I mean Google Adwords won’t let you advertise and just about every other mainstream advertising source frowns upon your type of websites.

What you would do is approach someone who is already having a little bit of success and ask them if they’d be interested in doing some ABC linking with you. Obviously if you approached someone way beyond your level it won’t be a good fit.

If you stick to someone who maybe is just a couple months ahead of you though you might get lucky if you ask enough people. When they say YES then you’ll link your website to two of their websites and they’ll link one of theirs to you.

So they own websites A & B and you own website C… You link website C to A & B. They link website A to your website C. Repeat this process with a couple more webmasters and you’ve got some decent traffic coming in.

Obviously you can’t do this with too many people so you start another website doing the same. Now you are the A & B guy and website C guys are asking you for links. So you get them to link their one site to 2 of your sites and you just link one of yours to one of theirs.

Can you see how this starts to really build up! Once you reach the point of having 5 – 10 websites you’ve got a broad network of linking partners and traffic flowing everywhere.

Where Do You Find People To Link With?

Once you’ve got quite a few websites (some affiliates have hundreds) you would end up starting a new website with a giant list of websites people can link up to you with. These websites are called “link lists” and there are some famous ones in the underground circles of adult website affiliates.

I’m not going to link to them for SEO reasons but if you Google it you should be able to find some.

You can even automate the process by using either custom made scripts or buying a link list or ABC linking script. That way you’re getting new links and new traffic all day long without having to be hands on.

How Can I Do This?

Let’s pretend you are an affiliate for related websites. You’ve got this website that talks all about the Acai berry and product reviews for the best Acai offers. You then search Google for other health related sites, probably not direct competitors though. Let’s say you find a guy with a couple different websites for example one about Hoodia and one about pre-wedding weight loss.

You approach this guy and say “If you will link your Hoodia website to my Acai website I’ll link to both of your websites from my website.” You may not get a yes from the first guy but if you asked 100 webmasters chances are you can get one to say yes.

Now you’ve got some traffic coming in and the more you have the easier it gets to barter for more ABC links. Once you’ve got 5 – 10 of these websites you can now start up your own automated link list site. Pretty soon you are dominating the health industry because you’ve got links and partnerships with all the big players in your market.

Oh yeah and all of this was done with simple banner ads… LoL the guys that say banners are dead just tickle me pink!

Just like everything else I teach here none of it works just by looking at the words on the page. All it takes is action and action builds confidence!

Go Bigger,

Great post Justin. Although I would never enter the porn industry, I figured out almost right away that we can learn a lot from those guys. After all, it is one of the most successful industries ever (if it isn’t the most successful).

The thing I find interesting about this post is I don’t see many people suggesting this type of linking pattern. Many people tell you to just ask people to trade links, but not trade two for one, and then flip it around when your sites become more powerful.

Oh, and stop telling people banner advertising does work! You are supposed to join the gurus in saying it doesn’t so that you have less competition and make more money! Just kidding…I love the “tickle me pink” line.

This is a good series, keep it coming Justin!

Hello Justin!

I was just about to go to be when I refreshed my email and just saw your message. By now you know that you are one of the few people that I always read and ohh boy did you kept me up for a few more minutes. I was tired but I just saw an update to one of my favorite posts not just yours but from all the blogs I’ve read. I still read part 1 of “how the porn guys do it” frequently. Your insights and your brightness to study the adult entertainment marketing industry is nothing short of amazing. I am still trying to assimilate the great insights you are offering in this valuable post. The only thing I am mad about you is WHY you have not created a study course where you teach the techniques used by the folks from the adult area.
But I still thank you for this great series that you are offering. Please keep up with this fascinating topic.

Best luck!

Thanks for all the kind words… I haven’t created a course because I don’t have time to create courses on every subject, plus there’s not much more to it. I’m giving you everything you need right here… Lemme know what else you would need to be able to get started?

Build membership site, charge low price for trial, have a short trial period, charge $29.99 per month, update content often, have a really strong affiliate system, train your affiliates in how to get traffic. Done

Hi there,

I wanted to ask how to actually do the linking. Can I link to my own other sites, and do I need to have a few different hosts to make it work for me?
Yours
Michael.

You can link to your own sites if some of them already have traffic but really the purpose here is to get traffic from others. And no you don’t need different hosts, we’re not talking SEO here.

All you do is ask other website owners who have sites related to yours if they will link to you. To encourage them to say yes… You offer to link to 2 of their sites if they will link to just one of yours.

I don’t get it. You get a reciprocal link and they get a reciprocal and a one way link?

I had thought that reciprocal links were highly discounted these days.

In paragraph 3 I say we’re not talking about SEO and reciprocal linking… Totally different strategy here.

We’re using banners to get traffic from other websites… Not text links with anchor text for SEO.

Good Stategy Justin.

So Create A Banner and Advertise on their website. I have not too much experience with Banner Ads.

I am sure you will create a Course in the Future to accomplish this. Lol!

If only I had time to create a course on every topic! The trick with banner ads is to not make them look like banner ads. Same copywriting rules apply but you just have less space and always be rotating different banners to find out which ones convert the best.

Adult Industry is pretty easy money. $40 per lead on a lot of sites. I generally do around $2000 a week in adult with minimal effort. Money is money, promoting adult isn’t the same as being in adult movies or anything.

Next look into something thats popular in Adult. Pre-Checked Cross Sales. ;)

Glad you liked it… Would love for you to write a guest post about the Pre-Checked Cross Sales thingy, haven’t heard of that one yet. Wondering if it’s like pre-populated forms like a lot of our CPA affiliates have been using lately.

Hey Justin
So now if my wife catches me looking at porn websites I can just tell her that I am doing market research. LOL!!
Thanks for the great post. Can’t say that I had really thought about doing a 2 for 1 link swap.
I must have missed the first post in this series so I am going back to have a look at it now.

Thanks
Steve

Again another wealth of great usable information.

It’s awesome that You put what can seem like a hard thing to achieve in simple easy to understand steps and how it’s relative to our own industry.

And THANKS for that !

Keep the GOOD stuff coming please ;-)

Justin,
I have heard you mention the importance of banner ads before and it’s finally getting through to me that banner ads are still an effective way to attract eyeballs.

After reading your post I thought I would look for some examples of banner ads on some of my favourite sites and it’s actually quite hard to find any good examples. Or maybe I’m looking on the wrong sites

What is the ideal number of banner ads that should be used and where is the best place to put them on a site. Or is that best left to testing to see which placement gets the best results?

The power is in the links and there in no denying it. I do however like to take a little more automated approach to things by either using some kind of software (for the low PR links) and outsourced help for the links with more juice.

I think the key is in the consistent effort that you put into it and if you can get i.e. 10 new links to your site per week then you are already way ahead of the game (even if it is low PR links).
