How I Got 13k Visitors This Month

April 3, 2009

I've noticed that you read my blog a lot, THANKS! Lemme know if there's ever anything I can do for you email me, twitter me, or facebook me

A lot of people ask me how to drive traffic to their websites. Some of them even ask me how I’m getting so much traffic. In celebration of me hitting my first ever “Alexa Hot URLS” here’s a video showing you exactly how I get my traffic, where it comes from, and how you can do it too.

Here’s a couple other traffic methods I am using, have used, or plan on using soon…

Pay Per Click Marketing

Google Adwords is by far my favorite way to drive traffic to websites. However it doesn’t always make sense. For example I wouldn’t drive Adwords ads here to my blog.

But for websites where I have a product to sell or I’m building a list… Adwords is awesome. It’s the only source of traffic I’ve ever used where I can start from nothing to getting hundreds of visitors overnight.

My favorite technique for Adwords is to bid on my competitors domain names, personal names, and product names. I call this trick “Step 8″ because I learned it in Andre Chaperon’s “Affiliate Bully” ebook, among a lot of other great tips.

Most marketers are one track minded, they just go after the most popular keywords. Things like product names, domain names, and personal names are usually off the radar to the average PPC marketer. That’s why the click prices are so low.

As you saw in my video above, ALOT of my traffic comes from exactly those types of keywords though. The best part is the people typing in those types of keywords are in the latter stages of the buying cycle. Swoop in with a killer review and a hot unique bonus and you got yourself some sales!

Cost Per View Marketing

This is one I first learned of through Matt Bacak at an event we were both speaking at for Russell Brunson. It’s a little complicated to explain in text, but I’ll do my best.

Ok so their are content publishers like Zango.com for example. They give you content that you want in exchange for you downloading their toolbar. Before you download the toolbar you have to agree that you are willing to be shown ads from time to time.

Then we as marketers can login to Zango and display our ads to those people with the toolbars. How it works is whenever a person who has the toolbar installed types in a web address or keyword it may trigger a full screen pop over advertisement.

What I do is login to my account with Zango or TrafficVance and target as many URLs as makes sense. For example if I was selling an SEO ebook then I would target every SEO website I could think of. Then I make my bids for how much I’m willing to pay per view of my website (when it pops over).

As of my writing this I’m paying as much as 7 cents and as low as 1 cent per view of my site. Because it is more of a mass traffic source, not as targetted as Adwords – YOU MUST SPLIT TEST!

I’ve gotten as much as 4,000+ hits to one of our websites in 3 days using CPV marketing. It’s not the highest converting, but with split testing I was able to make it profitable for an affiliate campaign of mine. If you want to find more traffic suppliers of this type then look up “contextual advertising.”

Mobile Video Ads

Here’s one that I have not yet used, but i plan on it sometime this month. The company I’m going to buy the traffic through is called Ad Mob. what they do is help iPhone app developers monetize their apps by using sortof like an Adsense model.

If you are an app developer you can put Ad Mob ads on your App and when people click them you’ll get paid a little pocket change for each click.

As an advertiser I like this method because they let me post videos as my ad. I think this is great because a video that pops up right on someone’s iPhone is a lot more attention getting then a 3line text display. I can really get creative with this and possibly even use it to launch a viral video campign.

Again I haven’t ued this method yet, so I don’t havea lot of info or statistics yet. When I do I’ll let you know here on the blog. I will say that it looks very promising for anyone who knows how to create either high converting videos or highly viral videos.

Also, video ads aren’t all they serve through their ads. It’s just the avenue I was going to use. It can also pop open a website using the iPhone’s built in browser.

I hope this post has given you some new website traffic ideas. There is plenty of traffic out there you just gotta go out there and get it. As I said on my buddy Alejandro’s Ustream show the other night “My level of success changed the moment I started buying traffic instead of courses.”

  • Hi Justin,
This post was very informative. Thanks for the information.
  • Justin Brooke
Hey Maggie & Donovan, thanks for always leaving a comment you all rock. Yeah, Donovan sry to say there is no shortcut. There are some systems that make it easier but no real shortcuts. (Unless you have ALOT of money!)
  • Justin,
You keep taking away my excuse for not doing better on line. I think that it's finally sinking in with me that it's doing many little things that adds up to getting the traffic to a site. I am just getting to some of your earlier post, I know that I have said it before, but I cannot get over the great content that you have in your post.
  • Wow! You never stop giving us that Little extra.

Looking into Sango and Traffic Vance now.

Great post, plus great reading others comments, even through those comments I believe we all learn.

Thanks once again, for such valuable content, plus many thanks for those who make comments because we can all learn.

    Love and Light
  • When you install the Google Analytic code into a blog are you just adding it on to the Page Template or do you also need to add it to the Main Index Template?

    <abbr>June’s last blog post..Create Free Affiliate E-book In Seconds</abbr>
  • Justin Brooke
I use the Thesis Theme, which I highly recommend, and there is an area in the control panel that says "put your analytics code here" so it makes it really easy. But yeah before I started using Thesis I just added the code to the page template that way it gets inserted onto every page of your blog.
  • Hi Justin,

Enjoyed the video but have a question. You mentioned you aren't doing enough with video - are you still using traffic geyser or have you moved on to something different? Any info you want to share is appreciated:)

<abbr>rwilliams’s last blog post..How to Become a Millionaire in Three Hours</abbr>
  • Justin Brooke
Yes still using TrafficGeyser... I meant not doing enough video for my own personal marketing. I do plenty of video for affiliate marketing and clients.
  • Hey Justin,

I'm a big fan. I have a question about one of your recent videos, where you say that most of the sites selling on Sitepoint are entertainment-related.

When I go to the 'Startup Websites' marketplace, I don't see a single entertainment-related site for sale.

Am I looking in the wrong place?

By the way, is there any place that maintains a day-by-day list of sites sold on Sitepoint?

Thanks in advance for your help,

    Lucky Balaraman

When I say entertainment I don't specifically mean TV and movies. I mean types of sites that are entertaining. For example take a look at all the sold websites versus the unsold. Most of the unsold sites are all about SEO, Forex, Credit, and business. Most of the sold sites are about recipes, games, blogging, or unique web applications.
  • Hey Justin,

Thank you very much for your detailed reply with its INVALUABLE information. I always appreciate a guru who takes the time to answer individual questions. I am now a bigger fan than before.

eeek... Let's not use the guru word around here! haha but thank you for the compliment. I'm no different then anyone else, I work hard, and don't mind sharing my success stories from that hard work.

Cool Video and always quality content from the best Justin Brooke. I really like this part:

My favorite technique for Adwords is to bid on my competitors domain names, personal names, and product names. I call this trick “Step 8″ because I learned it in Andre Chaperon’s “Affiliate Bully” ebook, among a lot of other great tips.

I like how Russell Brunson talks about Andre Champeron, Affliate Bully, a guy from Texas, threw gold out into the river, and guy bought all the shovels. This guy made millions selling shovels, Cool Story by Russell.

This is very good tip on promoting your keywords. I think it is funny that you said the fling was a mistake on your branding. Yeah, I never got nowhere with that site, LOL!

Take care, and keep the content coming.
Feel free to click on my name and leave a comment on my post, What the Hell is A Micro Continuity Program? blog post.

    I would appreciate that,

  • Justin Brooke
Yeah Russell has some pretty interesting quotes and stories. Over the years of being one of his closest students I've gotten to hear a lot of them. Some times I hate hearing them because they are so right and make me so wrong.
  • PS : all this long tail stuff is proof of Google's LSI Algorythm doing it's thang.

Yeah it's hillarious to go through and just look at the crazy things people type into the search engines. I think at Dogpile.com they have a way to watch search queries live as they happen. It's better then comedy TV I swear!
  • Great Post Man! Your Traffic is Ridonkulous! Mine has been steadily increasing...

You saw it yourself... It's a lot of traffic but really its just a lot of little traffic sources all combined together. Take that blog of yours and just start churning out more and more content and the search engines will start picking it up.
  • I've always targeted keywords including product names and variations, but up until now, I've never really checked which keywords were bringing me the most traffic. When I did check, it's always the product name itself that brings the most traffic. Thanks for this post Justin...it gave me a real smack in the head :)
  • Justin Brooke
Glad you see it man... So many people I talk to are just so blinded by "big shiny keywords" instead of looking for statistical proof.
  • Nice tips Justin :-)

I am checking out Zango and TrafficVance now. You should have placed your affiliate URL there. lol

  • Justin Brooke
Yeah I coulda but I'm not really all about scraping out every dollar I can get. More focused on making sure I do my best at providing the best content I can come up with.
  • I subscribe to quite a few blogs but I must say that I read yours every day because you always give something different. Haven't really done anything much at all with CPV ads but I am going over to the websites to check them out. Thanks for the tips.
  • Justin Brooke
Remember, make sure you have split testing software when trying out CPV. It's a little harder then other sources to make profitable. But once you get it profitable OMG there is just sooo much traffic you can buy with it. I test 3 completely different versions of my page and then run a taguchi on the winner version to really sharpen it down.
  • Justin
I love you video on getting traffic. You provided me with some things I need to do with my blog. I use google to track my visitors too I just need to get more into it.
Thank again for the great info

  • Justin Brooke
Hey Bruno, Long time no see. Glad to hear from you.
  • Excellent video. I would follow your advice and not go for the "porn" keywords, lol. Anyway, I purchased your "SEO Lies" and this is about one of the best investments I have ever made. Needless to say that my ROI for this investment goes way over the scale of reasonableness. I would have paid a little bit more:)

I implemented what I learned from you, by the book, and at one point, and for a particular keyword, my traffic for three days, simply hit the roof. And as you can see, I am already applying here what I have learned.

Thanks again and for the record, SEO lies is a must read if you are serious about optimizing your website for success. Would recommend it in a heartbeat.

  • Great post Justin,

I am always wondering where people get their traffic from. I have just started working with PPV and so far the results have been fantastic. Please keep us updated about your adventures with AdMob.com I set up a ad campain there and added a few hundred people to a niche list in 24 hours. I truly think that Mobile advertising is going to be just as big as PPC in a few short years...

  • Good stuff Boogie! I know you've shared these types of methods with me before man, it's the goodness really dude.

I haven't messed with many of them, but I know it works. Even your ppc methods can still work with seo/organic traffic, targeting the same type of keywords.

I know ppc leading to a landing page and building a list from that traffic is a huge business builder.

    keep bringin the hits man!
