Get Out Of Your Own Way

Recently there seems to be a huge wave of people getting in their own way regarding making money online. What I mean by that is they are so close to the money, they have all the skills they need, they have all the tools, but then something in their mindset is stopping them from actually putting it all together.

That’s what I want to talk about today… Is the mindset as well as the system that you need to get yourself into otherwise you’re just going to keep banging your head against the wall.

Everyone is different so there are always little personal tweaks to this lesson, but 99% of the beginning “Internet marketers” that I talk to have these same 3 common problems. If they could just conquer these 3 issues I think they would start having phenomenal success.

Don’t Add More Highways To Your Trip

In past blog posts I’ve talked about creating a goal and then a plan to reach that goal. Once you have your plan one of the worst things you can do is let yourself get introduced to any information that doesn’t help you get to the next step of your plan.

For example last weekend I went to Joel Bauer’s workshop in California. It was GREAT! He gave me some killer tips and strategies, but those strategies made me change my focus on one of my plans just a little bit. Luckily, I know to watch for these influencers and was able to keep the impact low.

I saw many others creating whole new businesses and pushing the one they were already working on off to the side. I can’t even count how many times I’ve done this and Russell Brunson has made fun of me every time I did (which I thank him for).

Even though these seminars, workshops, masterminds, and courses have great information. It’s very important to protect yourself from getting influenced by these great strategies. Otherwise it’s like your plan is a highway you are driving down and you have the map all planned out. Then you get influenced by one of the new latest greatest shiny balls and all of a sudden you have 3 more highways added to your trip.

If you don’t stop this early then you never reach the end of your trip because you are constantly adding more highways to the map.

In fact what I do now is create my goal, write out my plan (with help from mentors, masterminds, and friends), and then I try to turn off any communication channels that might tempt me to add to my plan.

It’s good to always be learning and making your business better. However, you first must finish one plan to analyze it’s success – Then you can seek out more educational material to learn how to take your plan to the next level. If you’re constantly making your plan better before it’s finished then you’re constantly in building mode (which doesn’t pay) instead of being in promotion mode (which does pay).

Fancy Frills Are For Ladies Dresses

This stuff doesn’t have to be complicated, but I see so many people trying to make it complicated. They ask stuff like what should my website look like, what should I say, should I use video or no video, should I this, should I that.

People don’t really care if you are perfect or have a perfect marketing system. All they care about is getting what they want and finding a solution to their problems. Which is why research is so important.

When someone hits your web site all you have to do is make sure your information/message is organized, easy to read, on target with the visitors wants, and have proof that your solution will work. Price barely even matters since it really depends on how bad the person wants what you have.

Price doesn’t even matter on whether they can afford it or not. If you don’t believe me just ask any crack head if they’ve ever been able to buy crack when they had no money to afford it.

From there you have a couple important things you want to do…

1.) You want to capture leads from your web visitors so you can re-market to them

2.) You want to convert them from visitors to buyers

3.) You want to maintain the relationship so they’ll buy again

Notice graphics, video, or fancy sales tactics aren’t in that list. They can help increase conversion later down the road, but as for just getting started and being GOOD ENOUGH – nothing else matters.

All you need is a blank page with an attention grabbing headline that explains how you can help make your visitors life better. A raw video or written message explaining that you understand their problem and have a solution with proof that it works. Finally you either have a form for them to fill out or an order button.

If you’ve done your research correctly, then nothing else is needed.

To prove it to you I ask you to check out my long time friend and mastermind partner Travis Sago at BumMarketingMethod.com – Personally, I hate that site. I’ve asked him if I can pretty it up many times over the last couple years. But he could careless since that page, the way it is, has been responsible for over a million dollars in revenue for him.

It has exactly what his web visitors want and says exactly what it needs to say to get them to believe him. If you are still just starting out online I would urge you to only focus on exactly that.

What do they want and what do I need to say to make them believe that I have that.

(We have templates that are proven to lead generate and convert visitors to buyers in TheSiteFlingMafia.com ).

Your Opinion Doesn’t Equal Their Desires

If I had a dollar for eveytime I’ve heard someone say “But I don’t think they would pay for that” I would be able to buy a very fast car. The problem in that statement are the words “I don’t think” – WHO CARES WHAT YOU THINK!!! You are not buying from you.

The only thought you should care about are those of your target market. In fact I would urge you to ignore this whole blog post. I mean maybe your market DOES need to see a fancy web page. For example if you are a web designer trying to sell web designs… You most likely need to have a well designed web site or at least examples of well designed websites that you have built.

My buddy Jason Moffatt preaches that you don’t have to have hollywood quality videos to make a ton of money with video marketing. However, if you are selling high quality video production services then you better have some high quality videos for people to look at.

It’s not that I’m wrong about not needing a fancy website or that Jason is wrong about fancy videos. For the most part in most niche markets we are right. However, it always depends on what the niche wants not what we say.

My opinion and your opinion don’t matter. You need to do the research to find out whether your market will pay for your widget. If you want to be successful then you’ll realize that it’s not you who matters it’s your market that matters.

The more you focus on them the better your marketing will work and the more money your marketing will make you. Don’t think, don’t guess… Ask them what they want, they’ll tell you, and then you’ll have perfect marketing.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure f it’s even possible for me to express this lesson the right way. I think I covered all the bases, you’ll have to let me know whether I helped shed some sunlight on dark areas or not.

I have a feeling that this lesson just might be one of those ones you have to learn the hard way and let it stand you up and slap you in the face. I’m just hoping that this blog post will help get anyone who needs it to get to that face slap faster.

I totally agree with you on sticking to one project at a time and shutting out everything else going on around you. Jumping from project to project will never make you any money. Pick a project, stick to it and get it out there.

So many golden nuggets in this short article. Hope people take advantage of them and wish I had sooner ;)

Love this audio plug-in! Listen to my comment. Thanks!

Hey Justin ,
Recieved your email, and what is driving me bonkers is I’m getting about roughly 85-112 visitors to the site a day and I’m not converting one of them as of yet….And this has been like an ongoing problem with the rest of my websites as well.
I have some small edge on the SEO work but I need to increase my traffic, but before I do that I want to get the websites to convert.. take a look and let me know what you think if you could ..
The Web sites are wholehousesurgeprotector.net & tacticalaffilliateassault.info I appreciate it , thanks mucho!
p.s. what type of martial arts are you into? I teach tai chi chuan (long yang form) and Pa Kua Chang as well?

chadisa March 2, 2009 at 2:46 pm

Yeah this describes me to a T, I am so bad I am pretty sure I am at least some part as to why Justin wrote this blog post, because I fire those types of questions at him daily in The Site Fling Mafia forum , thanks for being patient Justin ;)

Justin Brooke March 2, 2009 at 3:17 pm

No problem Chadisa

P.S. This will most likely be one of the last beginner focused blog posts for a couple weeks. I wanna start sharing some more advanced things like case studies of what I’m doing with TheDotComLifestyle.com (which is almost finished)

Maggie March 2, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Hey Justin and Chaunna,

Again, you hit the nail right on the head. I like everyone else (and it’s good that Justin said he did it too) was like a dog chasing the latest play thing thrown to it by the masses!

NO MORE! I am 100% focussed now and can hear those $$$ unlatching the gate and marching up to my door. Knock Knock – hello I think they are here! HAHA!

Well done!!

Love and Light

Hey Justin, I love your honest content and this blog topic could not be more true. I spent the whole of last year doing exactly what you described above. Deviating from my plan and going off on different tangents trying to find the ‘magic pill’ that would take my business to the next level.

This year I promised not to do this and I have found my 2-3 mentors that I am following and sticking to the one plan.

Very sound advice. Keep them coming it always makes me take a reality check of where I am at now and where I am heading in regards to my business target.

Have a fantastic day.

Cheers
Pammieb.

PS. As for the guy who made the comment the other day in regards to selling only 8 niche websites being a crock. Don’t let him get under your skin or rattle your feathers. I can see your integrity with every bit of content and blog post you write. I’d say he has his own baggage and you were the one he decided to dump on that day.
Focus on the people who matter, the others …they can wallow in self pity and carry on getting nowhere. Love your stuff :)

normz2 March 2, 2009 at 3:48 pm

Your information is right on. You can only travel one highway at a time. It is very easy to get side tracked with all the new ideas floating around. normz2

Good lord. So true.
Great post dude… it’s all about getting something out there, then tweaking later.
Focus on selling and promotion.

Helmut March 2, 2009 at 4:08 pm

Hi Justin,
I´m getting more and more impressed by your persuasiveness. You get always straight to the point and that`s something which some of the “gurus” are leaving out. You are truly one of a kind..
Thanks a lot.

Thanks Justin,

This is a great blog.

Thanks again

It is absolutely amazing to me as well how someone that is just starting out will try to pick all the roses on the vine instead of the one that is right in front of them. Internet marketing has to be a laser targeted focus in order to work best. If people would take a look at other successful marketers such as Russell Brunson, Mike Filsaime, Mike Dillard, and others you will notice that they focus a particular segment of im and not the entire home based-biz genre.

Just want to say GREAT post Justin. You went over these things with me a while back and like most beginning internet marketers, I used to do the same thing. I’d get started on a plan and then the next “big thing” would come along and pow. I was off trying something else before I finished what I was doing. I read one of your posts in the Mafia on the same subject and realized how stupid I have been. Really took it to heart. Now I have back tracked and got back to work on the plan that I thought would work best for me from the start. At least until I can make a full-time income online. Then I’ll start on phase 2 of the same plan. I am now profiting online and have reached a #1 listing on yahoo in my first niche for multiple keywords. I’m still working on google (my fault). For anyone reading this blog for the first time you need to take this post to heart and listen to anything that Justin Brooke has to say.

Tony Finbarr-Smith March 3, 2009 at 3:10 am

Hi Justin, great post.

It started out really well, summing up my situation perfectly.
It seems that despite having all the necessary tools and skills, I manage to get in my own way and mess it up.

HOWEVER, with my Lifecoach Mark W Foster, we’ve identified that the real problem underneath it all is that I have a self-limiting belief that is restricting me from achieving my goals.
Basically, despite seeing success in my conscious mind, my core beliefs do not believe that I am able to achieve success.

My core beliefs see me as lazy, unproductive, leaving things til the last minute, wasting money on starting things/buying courses/domains then not seeing them through til the end.
We’re calling him “Old Tony”, because we’re reprogramming me to be the opposite of those rubbish traits, and I need to believe that they are all behind me and in the past tense.

Ever wonder why those lottery winners are worse off a year after winning than they were before?
It’s because they don’t believe they deserve the money, and they find ways to get rid of it. All on a subconscious level, of course.

The worst thing is that the conscious mind may want totally different things, but the beliefs will win every time. Very frustrating!

Could you offer any ideas on mindset Justin? Did YOU face any of these problems?

I’m keeping a journal of my progress at http://www.phatmarketing.net/blog, and will be posting some of the exercises recommended by my lifecoach real soon.

Cheers,

Tony.

Jason,
You hit the ball out of the ball park with this one. This is the second blog that you’ve written, in the last couple of months, that was aimed right at me. Thanks Bro! It was what I needed to hear, to encourage me that I am on the right track. Thanks to you and Chaunna I have become focused and have eliminating much of the noise that was keeping me from completing projects that I have started. In fact I hate to tell you that as a result of staying focus I have kept from joining the “Site Fling Mafia.” Jason, I love it when you talk like this man!

DonovanMc March 3, 2009 at 9:38 am

Justin,
Please forgive my ADD. I was so excited by your post that I called you Jason. I’m going to have to start calling you “the man” from here on in. Or maybe I should call you “Big Daddy Brooke” or the “Don” after that great post on accountability.

Chris Hunter March 3, 2009 at 10:33 am

Hey, Justin!

I REALLY did leave you an audio comment! LOL!

Just don’t want people thinking that I spammed your comments.

Actually, I thought that other commenters would be able to hear the audio comment that I left, but the commenting system was also wanting me to leave a text comment as well. That’s why I only typed what I typed above.

Just letting ya know!

Later!

Net10 free airtime March 3, 2009 at 10:07 pm

Hey Justin,
I was just about to start flipping websites but you talked me out of it. I am going to stay on the same plan I have been on. Just joking but great post and I really like the comment you made about always in the development stage not in promotions stage.

I always said true love lives in a crack head, they will do anything to get thier fix. Very focused, determined, in love with what they do, achieving the end no matter the means.

And suppliers do best focusing on one product, building relationships for repeat business, delegating the nitty gritty work to max out ROI (outsourcing), the best ones use branding too- hmmm interesting.

I learnt alot today, Thanks for the great info.
Just have to map out my route now.

Maggie March 8, 2009 at 3:43 pm

keanu217 – I am not Justin, but because we are all family and help one another, I went in and had a look at your wholehousesurgeprotector.net site.

I stood back and looked at it from a point of a buyer, who has by the way had appliances damaged by power surges.

the things I noticed were –

No Product reviews. As a buyer I would have liked to read a couple, to make me feel more re-assured that buying from you would be the right thing. Plus maybe a couple of testimonials from customers.

You have a newsletter unsubscribe, but as a potential buyer, where was the newsletter sign up? Also what is your newsletter about, Could it help me by giving me tips on protecting my home more from power surges, storms etc? (this by the way could lead into you getting more products on your site, and me the buyer buying from you)

Also as a woman, a picture of a house on your header of the website would be better – I know when I go searching on the net, I look for a header that maybe tells me something about a site. Also I think selling to women you have only about 5-6 seconds to capture our attention, it may be longer, but not much.

Women I think generally push there men into buying certain things, or they are on their own with or without kiddies, if we have kiddies it is all about protecting our “Family”. Maybe push the family thing! Can you imagine what your family would do if the fridge went, the TV just before a big game, You kiddies computer, and they have a homework project to do – using a hairdryer when a search is on, see where I am going here.

Also after each statement you have made, ask the question – So What? then answer it – that will give you a “Benefit” – benefits are the intangible selling points, the ones that get peoples emotions going and their wallets open.

Just a few things, I picked up hope you don’t mind me putting these on paper. Tell me to pull my head in if you want. I will accept it!

However, 10/10 for going for the “Gold” as the rest of us are doing! I know in my heart if we all help one another, ALL OF US will get that unlimited income.

tacticalaffilliateassault.info did not come up at all – is there a problem there?

Again, my comments are to help you and please feel free to comment on any of my sites when I put them up for people to look at. (I will be having a couple coming on line soon)

Take Care, Best of Luck, and may the $$$’s roll in for you.

Love and Light

Business Web Design March 20, 2009 at 6:45 pm

So true.

I have lost count of the number of times I have been heavily involved in one project only to come across a great idea and I create a whole new project. The original project goes on the backburner and off I go with the new project. At least until the next great idea comes along.

I have since figured out that focus is not just something you do with a camera.

I love the way you simplify the whole process of website marketing.

I have a buddy who has been at the IM game for a long time. He can’t go 1 week without changing his plan of attack. I’m glad you laid this out for all the ADD IM’s out there. Only a few people talk about this and you are one of them dude.

Jenn Spencer April 13, 2009 at 12:14 pm

Justin, thanks for this article. We definitely need to apply the focus you are talking about. As new internet marketers, I can attest to the fact that it is so easy to divert from the highway onto plenty of side roads! There is sooo much incredible information available and its easy to get distracted but by setting our focus on one thing at a time and being sure that all we do is aimed at the same goal, I’m sure we can have success after success. Thanks for all your great information. Glad I stumbled across your page here and I’m looking forward to more from you! Have heard tons of great things about you, especially from Russell Brunson!

Thanks again,
Jenn
