Entrepreneur or Employee… Which one are you?

May 25, 2009

I've noticed that you read my blog a lot, THANKS! Lemme know if there's ever anything I can do for you email me, twitter me, or facebook me

One of the biggest factors in finding success is the difference between your mindset as an employee and your mind as an entrepreneur. Let me give you a real quick example of what I’m referring to… I’m sure you’ve been to a bookstore lately and may have seen the books about “the millionaire mindset” or “thinking like the wealthy” etc. Well the reason they have those financial planning books is because wealthy people think and plan with money different than those in the lower classes. And in order to be successful on a wealthy level you have to think and plan your money wisely – otherwise no matter how much you make you’ll never be wealthy.
There’s a similar gap in how an entrepreneursmind works versus how an employees mind works. An employee asks for the answers, but the entrepreneur goes out and finds them. Now that you’re venturing into being an online entrepreneur you’re going to have to go out and find solutions and answers to your questions. So today, I wanted to give you some guidance on where to get your questions answered.

IManswers.com is my first suggestion to you. This site answers common questions that many people have as they move up through the world of internet marketing. You will only find questions and answers related to internet marketing on this site, but it’s definitely a great place to find answers to questions like these:

  • What is FTP and how do I get it to work?
  • How can I get my website noticed by search engines?
  • Where can I get step by step videos on how to setup PLR infoproducts?
  • How do I get a url so I can send it to my optins to view an ebook?
  • The list goes on, in almost any topic you can think of

The next place you should go is into the forums. Forums are a great way to find a group of like minded people that are all learning at different levels and sharing their experiences. I recently spoke with someone (name excluded for privacy) about using a forum. She signed up to it, and when she got there – never spoke to anyone. When I asked her why she didn’t ask her questions in there she said, “they’ll think I’m stupid!”
Let me be the first to tell you, “the only stupid question is the one not asked!” You MUST ask questions – and forums are a great place to do it. Here are some forums I’ve used over the paste 2 years to get where I am today:

Webmaster-talk.com
, YoungEntrepreneur.com, WarriorForum.com, DigitalPoint.com, and Wealthy Affiliate. (Don’t forget you can learn SEO and Traffic generation from our forum as well – TheSiteFlingMafia.com)

Yahoo Answers is my next suggestion – this is for any question in general. You can go there and search what wine goes good with pasta if you wanted and there’s an answer. Yahoo answers is a great place to do niche research, find solutions to your own hurtles, and meet others that have similar interests.

If you’re interested in learning with a live group, go to Meetup.com and search for your topic in your local area. For example, my good friend Alejandro holds local meetings that teaches businesses how to use Social Networking to their advantage – going to one of his meeting would be a stellar place to get answers to your questions. (FYI: He’s in Sacramento – his site is SacTweetUp.com – and “tweetup” is ‘net’ talk meaning a get together or meeting of people that are members of twitter.com)

My final suggestion to you is to use EasilyAnswered.com. Justin met the owner Tahir Shah at a recent seminar and really liked the guy. He’s got a great site that provides a lot of value. With his site, Tahir rounded up a large group of successful internet marketers to answer members questions. It’s similar to yahoo answers in the sense that you get to ask a question and then you get an answer. However, what makes this site so great is that you’re getting an answer from someone that actually makes money working in the niche you’re asking about, and they’re not just one sentence answers – they are recorded audios that you can listen to and go in depth with an answer for your question as well as tips, techniques, experiences, and resources that the experienced marketer has to offer on the topic.

No matter what site you use, you must start finding solutions to your questions. Don’t let the fear of not knowing an answer keep you from reaching your success. You have got to step out of the mentality that someone is going to give you the answer every time you need it and go out and find the answer. You must decide – Are you an employee or an entrepreneur?

Hope the resources keep you moving towards your goals.

Have a great day
Chaunna Farmer

Unfortunately I am both an employee and entrepreneur. Luckily my job is in search engine marketing so I get to get paid while I learn and apply it to my own business. Thanks for the great post Justin and Chaunna, love your work!

  • Another difference between the mindset of an Entrepreneur and Employee is your ability to outsource and employee people, don't try to do all the ground work yourself and even a little bit because you loose site of the bigger picture and you wont' be able to Go Bigger!
  • Nice post Chaunna,
No employee, or anyone else, is going to do the things necessary to make my business a success. Most employees are look to the owner for leadership and to make decisions on the direction the business will take.

I remember a seeing a picture showing the view from the owners box and and the caption detailing the rewards of being an owner and how great the view is. I think that it is also a great example of the fact that as an owner you have to look at your business from 100 foot in the air where you can see all that is approaching and needs to be outsourced or delegated to an employee. Employees are not rewarded to think of where the business should be in 6, 12 or 60 months down the road.

Thanks for the the great website resources.

Another good place to find answers is Answers.com.
I agree there are leaders and followers. You have to search for the answers to your questions if you are leader or entrepreneur.

    Great Post!
    Ray.

  • Research is the life blood of high value information. If you do not thoroughly understand what you are doing, you are highly likely to end up doing something else.

The research on millionaires that you mentioned is a good example. The author points out that there are two types of millionaires; the asset rich and the cashflow show-offs.

The cash-flow show-offs tend to make a big splash in the boom times, often by spending up big with other people's money. When the crash comes they are seldom heard of again except for a fraud case or two.

The asset millionaire is often the person next to you at the discount store, wearing fairly ordinary clothes. If you listen to them carefully, you may hear that they just picked up a block of units for a song from that other guy who just went belly up in the recession. The take home message is that asset millionaires own well run businesses that they care for by practising thrift and good management.

Which ones do you read about in the paper? Right, the flashier ones, but a bit of research can lead you into the real world where these other less ostentatious people plan carefully, execute thoroughly, spend wisely and often still drive a suburban sedan just like everyone else in their street.

And at the moment the few real millionaires that I know are telling me that cash is king and that governments that spend too much eventually create more problems than they solve.

In their opinion, it's time to create a solid cashflow business and save those pennies for the rainy day that is not too far away.
