Bloggin’ About Bloggin’

April 9, 2009

I've noticed that you read my blog a lot, THANKS! Lemme know if there's ever anything I can do for you email me, twitter me, or facebook me

Ever since I started blogging everyday the benefits have been amazing. The traffic, the sales, the relationship building, the exposure… Just on and on. I am 100% sold on the power of blogging now and thought I should share with you where I’m getting my ideas from.

If you take action on these lessons like I have then you too can start having an average of 700 visits per day like I’m getting now. That’s a lot of traffic compared to what I’m used to when driving just normal Adwords clicks to an affiliate offer and the best part is all this traffic has been FREE!

Below you’ll find the best of bloggin’ about bloggin’ blogs and blog posts that I’ve found in my research…

The King Of Kings… ProBlogger

Problogger.net is run by Darren Rowse and this guy REALLY knows his stuff. There is an immense amount of information on his site for people interested in starting a blog. Personally, I don’t think there is any course or ebook you could buy that’s better then what he gives out for free on his blog.

Before you head on over there I want to give you my opinion on where you should start. He has sooo much information that it can be intimidating to know where you should begin.

First just to kinda get to know Darren and what he writes about I suggest you scroll down to the very center of the site. You’ll see a little section called “Best of Problogger.” I’m sure you’ll have a jaw-dropping experience just from that alone.

Then I suggest you do like I’ve already done and start following his new “31 Days To Building A Better Blog” series. I’ve registered for the email updates and the RSS updates to make sure I DO NOT MISS A POST. He’s already on day 4 so you’ll have to play a little catch up, but it’s worth it.

Finally if you like all of that I recommend you buy Darren’s book called “ProBlogger: Secrets To Blogging Your Way To A Six-Figure Income.” I picked mine up at Barnes & Noble one day while shopping for marketing books, but you can grab a copy at Amazon.com if you like. For only about $15 you can’t go wrong and it’s way better then some of the high priced “guru” stuff out there.

What If You’re Just Starting Out

If you are at ground zero and don’t even have a blog yet then there’s a couple things you can do. The way I showed my mom how to start a blog was to go to Youtube and watch some videos about setting up Blogger.

That’s in my opinion the easiest way to get started, since blogger is free and self hosted you literally can get started by the end of the night with $0 out of pocket.

The next best thing and still free (if you have hosting) is to setup your own wordpress blog. Which is what we’re using here at SiteFling.com. If you need help with that one of my new mastermind partners, Lynn Terry, has created a step by step checklist for setting up wordpress on her blog at ClickNewz.com

Then once you’ve got your blog setup, first watch “How To Get Started Blogging” by Michael Martine from Remarkablogger.com. It’s a 2.5 hour long video that he shares for free. He covers a lot of the important fundamentals of having a strong platform to work from, but you may want to skip the first 20 minutes.

In the beginning he’s kinda just talking with his viewers about whats about to happen and it can be a bit dry. However, once he really get’s into it at about 22 minutes in you’re really gunna get the farm!

Finally, once you are up and running make sure you follow Darren’s 31 day challenge. Life will never be the same for you!

Last But Certainly Not Least

I don’t think anyone is born with the ability to write and that scares away most bloggers. They think that they have to know how to write really well. Just take a look at me, I barely passed english class and I’ll bet there’s no less then 5 grammatical errors in this blog post or any of them for that matter.

It’s about sharing YOU, just communicating with people who you are, what you like, and the stances you take on specific topics. It’s not about eloquent (I looked it up!) writing.

But there are a few do’s and and do not’s which are best covered over at DoshDosh.com in their Blogging Tips section of blog posts.

If I had to put a price tag on what I think the information is valued at in all the resources above… I could straight faced tell you at least $500. But thanks to the spirit and business models of blogging it’s all available to you for free.

But just reading about this stuff won’t do anything for you. If you want to have a successful blog then all it takes is action and action builds confidence!

Go Bigger,
Justin Brooke

P.S. Let’s play a fun game together in the comments below… “If this blog were a song what song would that be? My vote is “Eye of The Tiger” hahaha

• Hi Justin & Chaunna

Hope you are both getting excited about your up and coming website flipping weekend that unfortunately I wouldn't be able to make due to a previous engagement that would not allow me the flying time from the UK to get there for the first day...will just have to make do with the recordings!

I'm an avid reader of your blog since I became aware of you at the start of the year and have reposted your words of wisdom on my own blog. (SEO Lies etc)

As usual your post here is full of great tips and advice & Darren Rowse is one of the very best at the game with lots of quality content.

Another marketer I feel has a great knowledge of blogging is 'Yaro Starak' with his http://www.entrepreneurs-journey.com/

If anyone is wanting to know more about 'Wordpress' as a blogging platform you can get 10 Free blogging tutorials from Yaro and his partner Gideon Shalwick at http://www.becomeablogger.com/

This visit has been extremely valuable to me as I have now learned about Michael Martine from Remarkablogger.com. and will now take the time to study his works.

It's very hard, as a number of your readers have already testified to sometimes come up with the 'content' to go with the theme of your blog especially if you are in a small 'niche' and one of the things I tell people is to simply go to some of the article sites like 'Ezine Articles' and search for related content that you can post on your blog...remembering of course to leave all the original authors details intact with the article...No plagiarism here please :-)

You could also add your own introduction to the 'Article' and a summary at the end that would then make the article on your blog unique and you wouldn't have to worry about 'Duplicate Content' ...which of course you blow out of the water with your SEO Lies!

Keep the good stuff coming Justin...time to go and learn some more and then I can try and get my blog to a level near yours.

Cheers 'Big Man' your one of the best yourself!

• Hi Justin,

I started my blog in late November 2008 and I am getting between 400-500 visits per day, which is pretty decent.

I recently added a motivational video (a couple of posts back) with a bit of humour and it was viewed more than 10,000 times. That kinda knocked me out especially since I haven't even put it on You Tube yet.

I'm gonna check out those links above and maybe I will move up to 700 visits per day like you folks.

Thanks for the info.

Hey Justin, Just wanted to say that you & Chaunna are GREAT! I enjoy reading all of your posts, enjoyable as well as informative.
Song? The song that comes to my mind when I read all of your post is "Movin On Up" theme from the sit com "jeffersons".
Y'all take care & "Keep It Comin'"

HaHa thanks for the inspiration to keep "Movin On Up."

Thanks for the great tips - once again.
I have had a couple of attempts at starting a blog now but I find that after a few weeks I seem to run out of ideas about what things to write about.
• Justin Brooke
What we do is plan a whole month in advance so that doesn't happen. That means only once a month I have to try and come up with ideas.
• Hey Justin
Thanks for the great tips - once again.
I have had a couple of attempts at starting a blog now but I find that after a few weeks I seem to run out of ideas about what things to write about.
I have a few blogs that I follow closely - yours being one of them. Interested to know why you decided to start posting daily. I think its great, but it must be a real challenge to come up with such great content on a daily basis. Kudos to you for being able to do that.
Got a couple of weeks off work now from my day job so I can spend some time planning and assessing where I am at. Heading over to problogger to check it out now.
Thanks
Steve
• Justin Brooke
I started posting daily because I've had a been of a mind shift on how I want to be perceived online and what type of marketer I want to be. Plus, I had already had some good feedback coming from my weekly blog posts, so it was kinda the next natural step. I also realized that pretty much every other successful blog was posting daily if not more.
.
As for coming up with the content it's really not that hard for me now that I have so much experience under my belt. There's a lot of ways to come up with content either create your own from experience, be an interviewer, report the latest news, create a journal of your efforts, or just write whatever is going on in your head.
• Hi Justin & Chaunna,
Jonclaude from Paris last week I was in Berlin for a ppc seminar and one folk show me your blog. I never hear before of you I think you guy's are smart the way you share the tips and tools.

Wow! printed it out - will check everything out. Came at the right time, as my blog has just been finished. (I mean literally just finished!)

Now need to start blogging away, and driving traffic, etc. etc.

Learning heaps, everyday, the more I learn, the more I see there is to learn, and look forward to waking up each day pushing myself forward!

Now let me see, a song... ... ... "We are the Champions" because I see everyone, who follows you and Chaunna, are following "The Champions" and we can only become one.

Now onto those site you wrote about ... ...

Thanks Again

Love and Light to all

Read everything you can from the post above, implement what you learn, and soon enough you'll have a great blog of your own. I would HIGHLY recommend you invest some money in a premium wordpress theme... It really sets you apart from the rest of the crowd. I'm hard pressed to think of anyone with a successful blog that doesn't have a customized premium theme like Thesis or Revolution or something. I could be wrong though.
• Eddy Sparks
Hey Justin & Chaunna,
I get your emails and have following you for awhile.
What really piqued my interest was when you started to mention your blog.
When did you officially start your blog for internet marketing?
I am a very green newbie, trying to get my feet wet in the marketing arena, and am trying to set up a wordpress blog for the same.
I recently realized the power of a blog community for a trusted audience to market my own product or affiliate product to.
So now you have motivated me even more so.
By the way, where did you find that cool tiled background graphic? I am trying to find one myself.
And by the way Justin, if you could give me your own personal email, I have a question to ask as I might be able to help you (as my background is in graphic design). Perhaps we can help each other out.
Anyway, best of luck. You give hope to the common man.

Thanks,
Eddy Sparks
• Justin Brooke
Hey Eddy, I started with blogs all the way back in like 2006 but I always sucked at it. I've had probably 4-5 blogs before this one. With this one I started out just as a weekly place to treat my email subscribers to a good piece of real content. It started getting a lot of attention so I took the plunge to go daily.
.
As for the background it came with the template I bought for SiteFling.com... I just stole it from myself. I'd let you just have it but not sure about the copyrights and how much permission it gives me.
• Hey Justin,

I've been reading Problogger for a while now and it's taught me a lot. I've been trying to build affiliate sites lately, but I have a blog that I've just started to get into and try to post consistently. Of course, I've gotten behind, but I really think I could get a lot of traffic in a short amount of time.

It's a pretty personal blog and it involves a lot of community. It started from a Facebook note conversation so it already has some people that are involved. Just wanted your opinion and any suggestions. It's at:

http://www.bornagainagain.com

Thanks! And congratulations on all your blogging success.

Looks like a great blog, I might look for some more plugins that will encourage more reader interaction and I didn't see any kind of monetization strategy. Which it's ok to not be monetized right away but make sure you have a plan for it when things start taking off.
• Karla & John
Hey Justin & Chaunna,

Great post! I have been considering whether to do a blog or not. I have been looking for work since I lost my job 3 weeks ago and my husband not able to work as much due to his health. I am working on trying do build some sites and tie them together with a blog.. doing the research so I don't waste my time. My husband turned me on to ya'll and he keeps up with all that you do .

Thanks for all that you and your wife do and I know my husband would love to work side by side with me also.

Karla & John
• Justin Brooke
Sorry to hear about the job loss, that sucks but it could be a hand of change for you?? I do think blogging is great but it's not an overnight or even overweek way to riches. Give yourself 90 days, follow the Problogger thing for the first 30 days and then repeat 2 more times and you should have a very successful start.
• Encouraging words . I m a newbie to emtire blogging system how ever I had started a blog on one of my favourite subject . Every one of us ideas ,suggestion ,expertise which can be utilised by others blogging give us that platform.

good work!

keep it up!

Great content as usually Justin, I got the Free Seo Blog From Jeff Johnsons Blog Underground Confessions with all the Seo Plugins and he has new Plug In the activates more plug ins which is real cool.

Hey, Justin, I have my Blog installed now for a couple of weeks, And I have a 404 error message and it says No Comment under all my posts. So would you have any idea how to fix that problem.

So I am going to go on Wordpress.Org and see if I can find a solution to my problem.

If you know how I can solve this 404 error message, I would appreciate any advice,

Thanks,

I'm really not the biggest techy guy... Sounds like something in the database could be wrong though. If it happened to me I'd post a project on scriptlance explaining the problem and asking for them to fix it. Would cost about $20 - $30 at most.
• The song I would choose would be a good, down and dirty...

• The best part about your blog, apart from the content you put up, is the fact that you honestly reply to most if not all the comments!

It really is a nice feeling when the author of a blog talks to you. The feeling that my voice is being heard, is such a great feeling.

I'm on WF too, and I love a lot of guys from there and you are one of my favorite :). I read a lot of good blogs, but I don't comment on all, for a single fact that I am not sure if anyone even bothers to read what I write, but here I am sure my thoughts are heard loud and clear.

Thanks for the compliments and yeah I been learning that blogging/social media is about community and interaction. Too much "guru at the top of the hill" mentality leads to a lonely guru eventually! ;-)
• Hi Justin..
You got a personal opinion on Firepow blogging software? You didn't mention it...

I've just started blogging but I've already got a few blogs running and they're starting to get traffic now as it sends the blog to social bookmarking sites on total autopilot.. signs in automatically and everything...
I'd love to have some one like you check out my blog to make it more effective for selling.. If you can drop by it's at

http://superaffiliatelaunchpad.com

I could use some good advice, as I'm sure you'll see.. but it does look super cool for a newbie that is!
• Justin Brooke
No sorry I don't have any input on firepow. I do have some feedback for your blog though.
.
1.) If you have to use a free theme either make sure you customize it, get one that matches perfectly, or get one that is very plain.
.
2.) There is an awful lot going on in the sidebars, I'm sure you don't need them all. I only pick the most important ones and the ones that will help the most with interaction. For example you have TWO tag clouds.
.
3.) There's not really anything personal about the site. People are content starved but they are also interaction starved. They want to meet new people, thats why facebook and myspace are so popular.
.
4.) The content seems to be more about what you want to say instead of what they want to hear. I try to make my posts about things that people want to learn about and I don't link to an affiliate offer over and over again.
.
Just some tips that I think could turn your blog into a traffic magnet
• Justin Brooke
Hey Norm, thanks for being such a faithful reader and commenter, and yeah article marketing is quite effective we use it daily.
• Excellent Blog. Thanks for the tips. I have not got around to blogging yet, but I sure have been thinking about it. Another area that seems interesting is article marketing.

Justin:

I have been reading your emails for a few months now, been a member of your opt-in...I think I found you on Wealthy Affiliate. Anyway, I am so totally impressed with everything you are doing. You continue to keep your goal in site, and it is so very clear in this latest blog...yes I read every one of them faithfully. And do you know why? Of course you do, because you have so much great, useful and pertinent information in all of them (how do you do it?). I learn so much from you. Thanks for everything. Every day, and as soon as I get what I believe to be a great website (been working on that)...it'll be time for me to use sitefling.
Take care. Be well. Best wishes to you and Chaunna (so cool how you two are a team...)

You are too kind... Thanks for showing us some love and I got my start in WealthyAffiliate also. Been a member prolly almost 3yrs now or something (the account I have now is a new account). • Hey Justin,

I've been a lurker and love to read up nice points you put across. I totally agree with you, most people shy away from blogging, because they think they can't write.

Being from India, and studying in a local medium school, I never had to study English for a real long time. We had English as 3rd language and only we know how we passed all those exams ;).

but after having started blogging, I'm improving inch by inch. I know, I'm don't do justice when I write, but the confidence that some day I definitely WILL keeps me pushing to go for it.

Hopefully, some day I get a chance to be a Guest Blogger on your blog :).

Thanks for all the time you put in to write such good posts.

Cheers,
/Gautam
