When we planned the 90 day Challenge Justin and I sat down and decided the first few weeks would be all about content – that’s what Google loves, that’s what the viewers love, so it’s what needs to happen first when putting up a site in order to have a history for your followers.
Next on the list is what you love – revenue. Over the next few posts Justin and I are going to share multiple streams of revenue that every website can have. Today is all about Adsense.
We’re not going to go into specifics like how to put Adsense ads on your website – you can learn the basics here. What we will do is talk about the best practices for using Adsense effectively. Here’s justin’s top three tips for Adsense:
- Use Ads Very Sparingly. Adsense is not going to be your main monetization method, so we don’t need to have a page covered in ads. In fact, you’re only going to place ads in a few key locations on your site. The first is to place them as a “Fake” navigation menu. This would be towards the top of the page just above your content where the viewer would click to get to more related content.
The second place to put the content is inside the content. Break up your paragraphs with small ads. Now, I should warn you – I don’t mean to place those huge 2″x 2″ grids in the middle of every paragraph, but just enough so that as they are reading they may click on it thinking its a related article.
Finally, place ads at the end of your content. So many people skip this section because it’s at the bottom of the page. However, if a person is reading your article, finishes it – and then looks for something else to do. With an Adsense ad down there, it’s almost natural to click on to the next best thing.
- More Ads doesn’t equal more money. I touched on this a little in the last one, but you’re not going to make more money by putting more ads on a page. It has the reverse effect. When you put more ads on the page they begin to interfere with the user experience. The content and value is covered by ads – causing your readers to turn elsewhere for content.
- Attract viewers with long tail pages. When you write keyword targeted content you pick up viewers from all over the web. The payout on these long tail is small, however if you design a site where you bring in traffic with long tail keywords and have a main hub with keywords with a higher payout you have more of a chance for higher payouts. The key here is to structure your site and content so that when someone enters your site on a long tail keywords, they have access to “related” content on higher payout keywords at the end of each article.
My last tip for you today is to Track and Test. These tips work well for us and are from our experiences with Adsense. However, this heat map shows that other people have success putting adsense in other locations on their site. Your best bet is to track where you put the adsense and where they make you the more money. It may not be the same acros all niches and all types of content.
That’s all for today – if you have any questions feel free to post below. As always, I’ll hang around to answer your questions and keep you moving forward.

Hi, glad to see we’re now moving into the monetization module. Good stuff.
In regards to content, is it just simply better to build a site up with 20+ posts/articles before moving on to link building/monetization? Does Google rank larger sites faster than smaller ones? This might be why my traffic volume is always low – I only tend to build 5-7 page micro-niche sites.
Thanks!
The old secret to SEO was… blog daily
The new secret is… blog daily and ask for interaction

Yo Justin
Google Adsense can defiantly be an starting point for any new blog or site to begin with. I tell my clients that if you want to put adsense on your site, then you must first know their new guidelines.
1. Your site must be over 6 months old and I think you must have an certain number of pages..I’m not to sure about the last one..I would put the link here..but I’m not sure Justin will allow that, but you can Google it.
Anyway, Adding this type of revenue to your site will bring a little more money, and once your site reach peak level like Justin here…then your Google checks can possibly be up in the thousands.
But you do have to apply your self…

I just created a page for a customer to generate leads and I didn’t even think about adding a little ad sense into it… Thanks for the tips.
Don’t add adsense to a lead gen page!!!
Only add adsense to content pages like blog posts
