5 Must Have Tools For Webpreneurs

April 18, 2009

I've noticed that you read my blog a lot, THANKS! Lemme know if there's ever anything I can do for you email me, twitter me, or facebook me

Yesterday someone left a comment here on my blog asking me what I thought about Aweber. My immediate thought was “OMG what would I do without it! Then it got me thinking about what else couldn’t I live without?

These 5 tools have changed my life, without them I really wouldn’t know how to do what I do. They are such an important part of how I build my business, run my marketing, bring in customers… They touch every part of my business for sure.

Joomla

I’ve been using Joomla so long and so much that I almost feel like it’s my digital brother. Joomla is a content managment system which basically means it lets you build websites without needing to know programming languages. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t still have a learning curve though.

Once you know how to work with Joomla you can literally build any type of website you want. You could copy Myspace.com, you could make your own Craigslist.com, you could build your own EzineArticles.com, and yes I’ve even used it for salesletters.

There is tons of support in the main Joomla forum and extensions galore to build just about anything your imagination can think up. If there isn’t an extension already made that you need then you can always go to Joomlancers.com and have it made for you (for a fee).

Aweber

If I were a carpenter, Aweber would be my hammer! It really doesn’t have to be Aweber it could be any email management company that gives you autoresponder functionality. Although, Aweber is my personal recommendation.

Aweber is what lets me type an email one time and send it to hundreds, thousands, or in some peoples case hundreds of thousands to millions. Totally not spam either since Aweber doesn’t let you send any emails to anyone who hasn’t first “opted-in” to one of your email address collection forms. So everyone has given you permission to mail them.

Now if you email them just sales pitches and other horse shit type stuff then yeah they are probably going to press the spam button on you. It’s best to keep it informational and if you have a sales message try to keep it on a website they have to click-thru too.

The other really sweet part about software like Aweber is that they let you setup a series of emails that will go out to your subscribers on a pre-determined schedule. For example if you had a 7 part article that taught someone how to prepare the ultimate Christmas dinner, you could setup 7 emails and have them go out daily, weekly, monthly… Whatever your heart desires!

And you wouldn’t have to be there to do it, just set it up once and off she goes!

Camtasia

If you’ve followed me for any period of time then no doubt you’ve seen some of my instructional videos. Camtasia is what I use to make those videos. With Camtasia I record anything on my computer screen, even camera feeds coming into my computer, as well as my voice.

It’s the best software, hands down, for making instructional or demonstrational videos. If you were a software seller you could use it to show people how you software works. If you are an information market you can use it to create instructional videos. Or you can mix the two and create instructional videos on other peoples softwares and sell them as video tutorial courses.

Wordpress

What you are reading right now is being powered by wordpress. It is bar none the worlds most popular and most used web blogging platform. When I talk about wordpress as a tool I am talking about the self-hosted version that you download and install on your own hosting provider.

It also does more then just blogging… People have made salesletters out of it like MarketingBully.com, people have turned it into corporate identity websites, and even into membership sites using WPWishlist.com.

There is an overwhelming amount of support and just about anything you could want to learn about wordpress is available on Youtube for free. We recommend that if you do start using it to use a premium wordpress theme and not just any old junk found in the free theme directories.

Premium themes like Thesis, that we use, allow you a lot more freedom with your design and much more powerful search engine optimization.

DimDim

Last but certainly not least is a good webinar software. I used to use GoToMeeting and GoToWebinar but they are quite complicated. I went with them because they are pretty close to the best in the business, however, DimDim has all the right features for me.

With DimDim I can hold an online meeting and show my desktop, an application, or a whiteboard. I can use these features either for group coaching, a demonstration for a potential prospect, or as a sales plateform where I can do one pitch to hundreds in attendence.

What I really like about DimDim is that they are easier to use then other applications, really its all pretty common sense. If you can run a VCR you should be able to run DimDim. It also has a chat room which is killer for creating an interactive environment.

Using these 5 tools I could rebuild my business from the ground up. Without these tools I would have an implausible time trying to do what I do online, I urge you too look into these tools if you are a webpreneur yourself.

Like anything else though just having the tools won’t do anything for you. If you want to have a thriving Internet business in the face of the worst financial crisis the United States has ever seen then all it takes is action & action builds confidence.

P.S. What is your favorite tool? Did I miss one that you just can’t live without? Feel free to include an affiliate link if you have one also.

I'm not sure if that WP plugin would work... Email marketing comes with a lot of laws thanks to the ICANN spam act so I'd be quite worried about managing it on my own without a company who knows what they are doing to manage my campaigns.

Much smarter to just spend the $30 per month it takes to get started... You plan on making more then $30 a month right? So go for it! ;-)
  • Great list of Tools.

Learning new tools is the key to being able to think differently.

    Hey Justin,
I'm playing catch with your blog. One of the things I like about you and Chaunna is the fact that you are not just telling us about the success that you are having and then trying to sell a lot of programs, but you are showing us what you are using to get the results you are getting. I see that I am on the right track as I have 3 of the 5 must have tools mentioned in this article.

Question for you; why would you have both Joomla and Word Press. What can Joomla do that WP can't do? I am just curious as to why you would recommend both.
  • I believe email is a very important part of your business too.
Thats why I have to say this: Can't live without GMAIL !!

  • Thanks for the tips and the tools. I will try to work them in as I progress over the learning curve.
  • Hi Justin I take on board your five favorite tools "per se" . I use get response yeah didn't take long to work it out. Don't know Joomla have seen it in go daddy where I have hosted websites will give more attention now. DimDim sounds great for the future me and Camstasia is the right way. I downloaded another similar piece of software recently only have to find it. I could go on and on about tools I cannot comment on because I have many and not used them. So until I do I will leave it at that.

    Thanks.

  • Great list. I use most of these, and am about to check out Dim Dim. But Joomla is the must have for me as a website designer.
  • Justin Brooke
Yeah, I'm really surprised at how many people don't even give Joomla a shot because it's a little more in deth to learn how to use it. If they knew like me and you just how much is possible with it, I think they would change their minds!
  • Hi Justin,

Camtasia is my pick as well for making screencast videos. It's what we used to make our video demos and it's been great and easy to use. I also just got into using ScreenFlow because I was on the hunt for a similar tool as Camtasia but to run on and record the screen of a Mac. Like I said, just got into so I don't have that much feedback thus far. Perhaps others have been using this for a while and have some feedback of their own....
I wanted to contact you about a web app that may interest you or others who are after a way of making free Web presentations. Our tool is called Mikogo, and it would be great if you would consider dropping by our website and checking it out.

Thanks for dropping by with the comment and a recommendation for another tool. In the future please try to limit the amount of promotion in your comments. I almost deleted it for too much promotion but instead just edited out the last couple paragraphs.

Sharing is cool, pitching is not! ;-) No worries
  • Appreciate it Justin. Will do so. In the case that you check it out, feel free to contact me if you have any Q's.

    Enjoy your day. Cheers!

  • Hey Justin,

Once again I coudn't agree more with what you posted here I have used most of this applications in some of my work related stuff and although I have not had the opportunity to use Joomla yet, last week I was considering using it to create a website that I am working on and I was hesitant because of the learning curve but since it is so powerful and you so highly recommend it I am sure that it is worth using it.

I don't use Aweber but I do understand the need to use an email list manager as a way to stay in touch with your client's base and for now the one that I use is working out very well for me.

As far as DimDim this is the first time I hear about it (I guees is just because I have not had the need to conduct a webinar yet) but when the time comes I will certainly try it.

Thanks for keep on spitting out such wonderful and helpful content.

Dude Aweber is a MUST! Don't be like me and wait 2-3 years before you start building a list. Having a large subscriber list makes everything easy, it's like WD40 for making money!
  • Yeah Justin I know that building a list is as important as Oxigen for anyone who markets online and although I am not using Aweber I started using iContact when I finally understood how important it is to build my own list.

Jesus Pina’s last blog post..What is a Hookah Anyway?

iContact is just as good... Almost switched to them earlier this year.
  • Justin-

Thanks for including Dimdim on your '5 Must Have Tools For Webpreneurs' list. One thing I'd like to clarify for your readers is that we have free and paid web conferencing. With a Dimdim Free account you can host as many meetings as you want with up to 20 people in the room. You can share slides, your desktop, whiteboard, web pages, audio/video, and record your sessions.

    Thanks!

  • Great to have this all in one simple list.
I use Wordpress and Aweber all the time but haven't tried Joomla and DimDim
Love the idea of having a Joomla site built for $100 - do I just go on Sciptlane for this ?

    Thanks again Justin

Yeah either Scriptlance.com or Joomlancers.com like I mentioned in the post above. Joomlacers is just like Scriptlance but it's freelancers that are experts with Joomla.
  • Just wondering why do we still need Joomla? Can't Wordpress do it all? Or are there some clear benefits to Joomla?

Also how does Aweber in your opinion compare to constant contact or to a tool that lets you completely customize your emails like campaignmonitor.com?

    Sylvia

sylvia’s last blog post..How to turn your website visitors into customers
  • Justin Brooke
Wordpress is almost there, but not quite able to replace Joomla. There are still certain extensions that make Joomla more versatile then wordpress. However, if we were talking about each without any plugins then sure wordpress is the better CMS.

I don't know much about constant contact but I do know that Aweber has some of the highest deliverability rates in the industry. I think only iContact is beating them right now in deliverability.

And yes in Aweber you can completely customize your emails. They have 20 -30 templates you can start with or you can upload any of your own.
  • Thanks for the Dimdim.... Joomla still scares me. One day I'll tackle it. WP is still my man crush software...

    Hey Justin and Chaunna,

Great post as always. I think another tool people should consider is Can Studio ( IM version). In some cases you can find it for free but alot of times I have found it for less than 47.00 dollars. It is really preety good and for the most part does the same as Camtasia but for people who are just starting out, it is more affordable. The IM version for internet marketers has some cool things on it also.

Always enjoy your insight and blog from both of you.

    Karla and john
  • I don't know dimdim, maybe because i never use webinar. I like wordpress and autoresponder...
  • Hey Justin,

So what's the main different between Joomla and Wordpress?

How would you use them differently? I read that the main difference is that wordpress is just more user friendly, and with the recent development of top notch plugins is just as powerful... Is it just a more technical approach to cms?

But on a side not... What the heck happend to the Ice Man??? 3 knock outs in the last 5 fights... Plus Dana released an official announcement that he's through... you'll never see chuck back???

Also on the "Redemtion Fight" do you think that BJ Penn is just being a wussy w/ a p... whining about the illegal oils?

Oh yeah my list of tools is... (which is really more luxuries than needs)

    1. Skype
    2. Tweetdeck or Seesmic (I just so used to tweetdeck)
    3. Roboform
    4. ... and Elegant Themes

I used elegant themes to build dozens of blogs, until I upgraded to thesis... but for the person on a start up budget it's a great alternative...

    I'm going bigger!

I LOVE wordpress and camtasia... I wish that camtasia had an affiliate program! techsmith is close to my place so maybe I should pay him a visit and talk to the CEO! lol...

I use getresponse but I know that aweber is better :)

i'll have to check joomla and dim dim out...

    thanks for the post! :)

  • You are so right Justin. Without all of these tools we could forget about leverage, time management and automation. Tools are essential to accomplishing any mission quicker.

As a wise man once said. If I had 30 minutes to cut down a tree, I would spend 20 of them sharpening my saw.

Keep it coming dude! We love it.

  • Thanks for the post, Justin.

I've been thinking about Joomla, but didn't want to take on another learning project. I appreciate the advice about having someone else build the site for under $100. That may just be exactly what I end up doing!!

I love Camtasia and have already been playing with dimdim - except I haven't yet figured out how to show my desktop!! BTW - did dimdim raise it's prices? I thought it was cheaper than that for the pro version. Guess I'd better get back to playing...

  • Thanks for those tips.
Altough I personally hate joomla, since its too complicated for a guy liek me.
On the other hadn we have to admit that wordpress is and will be in the next yearts the platform to go on with website publishing. Theres so many people turning wordpress on a CMS right now, I can even compare it to joomla :)

As for aweber I gave it a try but fortunatly I dont have the needs for it righ now.
Comtasia the software aI use since 2006. Good for videos as you mentioned.

    Good post.

If you're serious about making it big online you should checkout Joomlancers.com - For under $100 you could have just about any Joomla site already built for you. As business owners we are not supposed to learn everything ourselves. We're supposed to find other people to solve our problems and just make sure they do it cheaper then the amount of money we make from solving that problem.

  • Hi Justin
Thanks for the tips and the tools. I have been meaning to have a look at Camtasia for a while now. I think you just gave me the push I needed.
    Thanks
  • Justin Brooke
You are going to love Camtasia and they have a bunch of free tutorials on how to use it right there at TechSmith.com.
  • i use dim dim all the time i think its great to use alot better than the paid services and its free there support rock they get back to you within a couple hours.
  • Justin Brooke
Yeah the free version is great but it only holds up to 20 people... The pro version is only $49 per month and lets you have up to 100 people. The more people you can have on a webinar the more money you can make!

In fact I bet you could post one WSO in the warrior forum saying that you will coach 10 people on one specific topic for $97 each. Then have enough to pay for DimDim pro for a whole year... Rinse wash repeat!
