Today’s Internet is NOT a “build it and they will come” place for businesses like brick and mortar businesses can sometimes be. You have to proactively go out and get people to come back to your website.
Having an a successful website really isn’t that hard, most people make it hard on themselves by trying to cut corners. Success has already been proven, the recipes are already there. If you’re willing to follow the recipes it’s really pretty hard to truly fail.
The most basic formula for a successful website is…
- Do some research to find out what people are interested in or even better something that they desperately need. For example; cures for ailments, services, how to guides, and software.
- Next you create whatever you found in your research that people are wanting.
- Then you research ways that you can drive the type of people that were looking for what you created back to your website. For example; social media, SEO, classified ads, or paid advertising.
- Finally you track, analyze, and optimize your website for each source of web traffic that you are using. You must do this step so you can monitor and improve the performance of your websites as not every source of traffic will like your website in it’s current state… The trick is to always be optimizing so that you get the most amount of people taking the action you wanted them to take once they arrived.
There is no secret, and if there was a “secret” then the above list would be it. Now of course for different business models there might be another step here or there but everything builds from that platform above.
In this post i’m not going to be talking about how to research what people want. I’ll address methods of research in another blog post but today’s let’s talk about traffic.
Free Traffic Vs. Paid Traffic
You have two choices… You either pay for traffic with your time and energy or you pay for it with your money. I personally just go after every possible traffic source I can get my hands on and then test it for profitability.
With free traffic you are usually going to have to either hire someone or use your own time and energy to go out and get that free traffic. Paid traffic is more of like a light switch, you just turn it on and off at will. The other benefit of paid traffic is there is nearly an infinite amount of it. Where free traffic can be pretty limited.
If you want to read about our free traffic methods and how to use them then I suggest you read an older blog post of ours called “Free Website Traffic Is 100% Possible.” Or keep reading and we’ll talk about 21 different places I’ve found for paid internet advertising.
Almost every single one of these sources will let you start with a very small budget. Which in my opinion is the key to success with paid advertising. I got my start with $60 in hand that I setup as a $2/day budget and turned it into $300 in sales by the end of the month.
I now spend thousands per month on advertising, but I started small, tracked everything, analyzed daily, and split-tested my web pages to optimize them for high performance. If you do the same then I promise you’ll find at least a couple profitable traffic streams below.
Top 21 Paid Internet Advertising Sources
THE KING! http://adwords.google.com
Google’s Adwords program is the ultimate light switch of web traffic for me. There are just so many different ways inside Adwords alone that you can drive traffic with. I can’t get into it all in this post but they have the normal keyword targetted campaigns, placement targetted (put your ads on other sites), the content network, and then extras like radio/newspaper/TV.
http://sem.smallbusiness.yahoo.com/searchenginemarketing
This is Yahoo’s version of Google Adwords, not as good but close and tends to convert better since Yahoo is more “shopping” oriented.
https://adcenter.microsoft.com
I’ll bet you already guessed that this is MSN’s version of Google Adwords. They don’t have nearly the amount of traffic that Google or Yahoo does but they do have an overall higher income bracket of users. So it works quite well for product sales especially to the 45 – 65 demographic.
http://sponsoredlistings.ask.com
Ok I think this is the last time I’ll have to refer to Google Adwords again, but ASK.com is the smallest of “the big 4″ search engines and ofcourse they have a pay-per-click network as well. This is the best network to use for medical/health related offers. Majority of the users are middle class middle aged african-american or hispanic women.
This is a pretty small pay-per-click advertising network. Can get some REALLY cheap clicks though! I like to start out my testing here since it’s usually cheaper and then take my results over to Google, Yahoo, and MSN for scalability.
http://www.stumbleupon.com/ads
Can’t figure out how to go viral on StumbleUpon? Well you can pay your way in with their advertising network. You basically pay per stumbler that see’s your site and force your way into getting lots of views which can possibly lead to more stumblers stumbling it for free. Good for jumpstarting blogs and other content based stuff like Youtube channels.
Now we’re getting into more of the MASS traffic type of things. CPV stands for cost per view, which like StumbleAds means you pay everytime someone views your webpage. Which is technically what pay-per-click is too, but CPV is usually a lot faster and a little more interuptive. SPLIT-TESTING REQUIRED!!! I’ve found it best to use very short lead in pages because you’ve got about 3 seconds, if that, for the viewer to decide if they like you or not.
This one and the next one are also both CPV traffic sources, so if you get one to work you can most likely scale up by adding the others. I only say most likely because every niche and every offer is different. I haven’t used this one yet, just out of not having the time to add it on, but my mastermind partners rave about it.
This is the CPV network I started out with and got over 4,000 visits in under 48 hours. they tend to have a younger audience (teens) so take that for what it’s worth. They get their traffic by trading browsers entertaining content in exchange for downloading their toolbar… Then once you have their toolbar they show you ads (full sized websites).
YES! Youtube has it’s own pay-per-click or should I say “Pay-Per-Play” advertising network now. You can get your video shown in the sponsored video section and pay for people to view that video. Haven’t used it yet, still thinking of a good video idea to use. My plan is to use this one in combination with the next one AdMob.com.
The guys who started this network are ROCKIN’. They are getting all kinds of press coverage from the biggest blogs in the world. Basically, they own advertising on the iPhone right now! You can advertise either a website or a video to the iPhone users via little ads on all the different iPhone apps.
If you’ve visited any major online forum then chances are you’ve seen AdBrite ads. They link targeted keywords in on-site text to a “hover over” advertisement that appears. If the reader clicks on that ad they are sent to the advertisers website. This network is very cheap and converts really low, great for testing because you can test cheap and if you get it profitable then scaling to others will bring HUGE profits.
http://advertising.superpages.com
Haven’t used this one but it’s pretty easy to describe… Pay-per-click just like Adwords but instead of the ads being on Google they are on SuperPages.com – I’ve heard from others that it’s great for people looking for local clients or marketing to local type businesses.
http://be-a-magpie.com/customer
this one is pretty cool and it’s on my list to test this week. You pay them to get their network of twitter users to post tweets that you wrote. Think of being able to pay people to re-tweet your messages! I’ll be using it to market a couple of the more popular blog posts here to get new readers.
http://www.kontera.com/pay-per-click-advertising
this one is just like AdBrite and if I was smarter I would have grouped them together. Same story of cheap in-text ads that you pay-per-click for but tend not to convert the best.
Social networks are all the rage these days and the big ones like Myspace and Facebook have over 200 million users. You’d also be surprised to learn that it’s not just teens using these networks. Facebook’s biggest demographic is 25 – 45 and Myspace is reported to have over a million users between the ages of 35 – 65. Use their pay-per-click network to put banners right in front of a huge wave of users.
http://www.facebook.com/advertising
No doubt you’ve seen the little ads on the right hand side of your Facebook home page… Well this is how you put them there. As with anything thats mass appeal traffic like Myspace and Facebook advertising you should make sure your offer is pretty mass appeal for best results. Targetting is kind of limited with Facebook ads as you really can only narrow it down to a select demographic and then a handful of keywords.
http://www.marchex.com/advertisers
this is another network I haven’t used but I have used other services they provide and I love the company. They are on my list to test, just haven’t gotten around to it yet. They are like a small version of Google Adwords with pay-per-click and pay-per-call options.
This one is kind of like a one stop shop for advertising on social networks. They make it easier then having to have lots of different accounts but in exchange you are paying a middle man fee. It’s pay-per-click and they say you can start with as little as $1 – Haven’t tried them out yet but I think I will next month to consolidate my Myspace and Facebook ads.
http://www.amazon.com/Advertising
Lottsa options here and with one of the worlds MOST TRUSTED websites ever in existence. Everything from selling your products through Amazon to pay-per-click test links. Hmmm… I wonder if you could be a kindle affiliate and advertise on Amazon??? Will have to try that… hahaha
Another small pay-per-click outfit that used to be exclusive to eBay but is now open. Clicks are cheap and conversions ain’t bad. They also have a refer-a-friend program that can get you free clicks!
Well there you have it… Pretty much everything you could ever want to know about where to get web traffic from all in one post (including the linked to post about free traffic). However, just reading about this stuff won’t do anything for you. If you want to have floods of profitable then all it takes is action and action builds confidence!
Go Bigger,
Justin Brooke
P.S. Do you have a traffic source that I missed? I’d love for you to share it with me and everyone else. Or maybe you have a question about traffic/analytics/split-testing… Etiher way you can post it down below in the comments.

Just wanted to remind everyone that everything changed for my business once I started buying traffic instead of courses. I know it can be scary at first but you can start with as little as $2/day like I did.
Justin the same happened to myself. I used yahoo ppc and found
buying traffic via ppc not as scary as one may think. Am now
using google adwords as well.
I look forward to start creating products so that I can sell them using paid traffic
. Great post again Justin, and yeah I wish I get picked in the contest

Buying traffic can be a great way to go, but you must write good ads and then track and test them constantly or you could wind up going broke. Adwords does provide pretty consistent traffic for your buck though.
Don’s last blog post..have you heard of Future of Info Marketing??
Nicely done Justin, I can’t agree more with you philosophies.
Without paid advertising strategies, your entire traffic strategy is incomplete.
All traffic costs you something, so it’s really about the measure of the expense, and if it is worth it in the end.
So awesome post, I’m definitely bookmarking these sites, and setting up testing accounts immediately.
Thanks for the list
Kevin
Hey Kev, Long time no speak… Hope things been good for you and thanks for the compliments.
Justin, you just saved me hours of research!! Just using this list alone I will be busy for months.
Thanks for the awesome content.
Dave
Glad I could be helpful Dave… And yeah with split testing this list should could you busy for quite awhile.
Justin, great article! And I 2nd what you said about your business taking off once you started buying traffic.
My business totally exploded once I started buying traffic from every source I could find. I’ll add one more tip for a great traffic source that’s almost unlimited:
*instead of ad networks, buying traffic directly from popular websites by finding their “advertise” link at the bottom of their site. Then contact them and start negotiating.
If you find the right demographics on a certain type of website appropriate for your product, I’ve found buying traffic directly from certain websites to be my overall highest converting traffic.
Another very important tip that I see many people overlook…
The more you can spend on the traffic, the more traffic you can buy, so it’s all about conversions, but ALSO about lifetime customer value. Look beyond just the 1st sale and you quickly realize that it doesn’t matter if you only break even, or even lose a few dollars per sale to obtain all of those new customers, because a certain % of customers will be repeat buyers, and you make the profit on the backend.
This greatly increases your ability to buy more traffic from more sources.
Keep up the good work Justin!

I like the youtube and the admob idea. I am going to try to implement that strategy. I think you are one of the best marketers in the world. I like your style and you are very straight forward.

Then I would add phone and email info to the top right kinda like Dave does over at http://www.DavidBullock.com – Looks really good though man, love it.

Justin,
Another great post. There’s enough information here to keep me busy for some time. This is an excellent resource. I’ve never used stumble upon before but I signed up for it and am trying to figure out how to stumble your blog.
Which traffic source would you recommend for a newbie? If Yahoo is close to Google and converts better, would it be better to start with Yahoo or is it better to go with Google’s Adwords program? Would the decision be dependent on what you are promoting and the market you are attempting to reach? I know that many sources have to be used, I’m looking for the one that would get the better result.
A number of the free sites that I have come across are better if you get the upgraded they offer. I currently use one where I took the up-sell and can email 3000 people every 3 days. I’ll take a look at the link for the free site in your post. Thanks again for all the great info.
To “stumble” a website you just click the litle thumbs up “i like it” button on the toolbar. Plenty of videos on Youtube to learn how to use things like this. I think you should start really small with Adwords first because there is so much more documentation, courses, and support. Then once you understand what you are doing you should start out with the smaller networks for testing, then as your split-testing results increase you scale up your traffic by adding another and another paid traffic source.
Hi Justin,
That’s a very nice list you got there! For the moment I focus my blog on providing ways to generate free traffic towards their sites, but paid traffic is definitely another important way to proceed.
I’ll make sure to keep this post of your and refer it to my readers in due time!
BTW, thank for dropping by and commenting on my blog!
Nicolas Prudhon’s last blog post..Week #9 Summary
YEah free traffic is cool, we use a lot of it I just make sure to outsource it since it usually requires tedious submission work. Here’s a great free traffic method that I just learned about this morning… http://www.dtalpha.com/talkback/?p=346
Hi Justin
Thanks for the awesome list of places to buy traffic. I am interested to know a couple of things from you. How many of these do you use on a regular basis? And what kind of ROI do you expect or target? Or do you just work on the principle that if you make more than it costs then it is OK?
Some of the internet marketers seems to use paid advertising with a view to simply building a list to start with, and then they monetise the list with offers and backend products at a later date. Is this something that you would do?
Thanks for the info
Steve
I’m currently using a handful of the ones above… Not all of them work out to be profitable to every offer. Some might work for you that don’t work for me and vice versa. I just try to always be testing something new as each one is like a little ATM machine and if I figure out “the code” (split testing) I can make that ATM spit out cash everyday. Some ATM’s are bigger then others.
.
Building a list is huge but their method doesn’t really differ from just driving to a salespage. They are still watching what their Visitor Value, ROI, and lifetime customer value is. It’s not about the money you make on the first sale, visitor value just helps you know that your advertising won’t break your bank.
.
The real money is in LCV… For example I have a campaign where it costs me $1.22 on average to acquire a new email subscriber. However, since I have tracked everything from the beginning I know that over my 7 email autoresponder series that new subscriber will be worth about $15.00 by the end of the 7 emails. – So I have ZERO problem with spending $1.22 to get that person into the funnel.
.
Nothing ever changes, even with free traffic you should still no your numbers. “No Numbers, No Business” – Matt Bacak
Thanks for providing the lot of information about the free and paid traffic. There are a lot of ways to generate traffic.useful information.
Great post, as always very informative looking forward to win contest

Justin. Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. Few words that mean a lot to me, specially from you (left you my reply there).
Traffic is important and there is no mystery that without it, there is no way you can make a website profitable. This list is valuable as it gives one a credible source, should someone decide to invest on paid traffic in the future. One key factor though, regardless of how or where your traffic comes from is what you mentioned above:
“I’ve found it best to use very short lead in pages because you’ve got about 3 seconds, if that, for the viewer to decide if they like you or not.”
Thanks for the list.
diTesco’s last blog post..How to Make Money Online Without A Blog
Yo got a nice blog coming out over there… I would try jazzing it up with some more customized design stuff little by little as you can. Content is good though!
Justin is right.
In fact, although I started with free traffic, I also found that paid traffic is the way to go.
As for the free traffic, I prefer to outsource it now.
Franck
Yeah, free traffic almost always involves some sort of mass submission to places to get a lot of it. That kinda stuff is too little money per hour so outsourcing it is a must as soon as you can. Do you use the phillipines or india?
Thanks for your suggestion on jazzing up my blogs design. Would not mind receiving some tips from you though:)
One question. Where and how do you outsource for “free traffic”? That’s interesting
Basically I find people either on ScriptLance.com or in the phillipines via craigslist (city of manilla). I train them on how to do what I do by making short videos. Then they do what I would have been doing instead of me doing it. For more info on the subject we have a video and ebook about it at http://www.flingandgrowrich.com
Thanks again. I will check out this video. Meanwhile I am looking forward to Part 2:) Have a nice day

Paid ezines aren’t usually something that let you start with just $2 – $5 a day. They are a good traffic source that we use but I felt it needed it’s own blog post. We’ll be talking about how we made an ezine with over 700,000 subscribers go from unprofitable to profitable.

Lyndon has sat in front of your video’s on Adwords and we have started a campaign. He split tested like you said plus tweaked etc etc and got First page 2 slot on our ads! On 2 Keywords and first page 3rd, 5th, and 2 x 6th spots. He’s gonna tweak those ads to get them further up.

Hi Firstly Justin, Great article great place to gen up on paid for traffic i have gone from knowing nothing to knowing enought to feel confident to give it a punt.
secondly – where can i find the video on Adwords that maggie talks about?
cheers
Hi Justin,
Its been a long time since we talked.
As always, great post.
I have been thinking of getting into adwords but somehow or the other cant make myself do it.
I am thinking of spending something like $5 a day but was a little worried , what if I dont get anything out of it.
But, I am surely going to try it out.
Please keep posting.
You are awesome.
Bye,
faraz
P.S. I hope you still remember me.
Yo FARAZ! Of course I remember you dude… You were like my first real student and you had some great results too. Hope you’re still doing well and how have your eyes been?
.
Another thing you can do if you are low on money is to use the coupons that Yahoo, MSN, and ASK.com give you for starting up a new account with them. It’s usually only $25 – $50 but sometimes that can be just enough to make a sale or two. Then you use your sales to add more traffic and just keep building until you can start taking some profits out.
I am doing quite well now.
As a matter of fact, I have already reached the goal I told you about and so I think I can afford at least $200 a month for buying traffic.
My eyes are better now since I started taking vitamins.
Thank you so much for all that you have done for me.
Would like to keep in touch with you.

Faraz
Justin,
Hey didn’t I meet you at the Rockstar Platinum Live event in Vegas? I have pictures!! Awesome post. I stumbled you. I read all your posts, and all your answers. It is so refreshing to see someone answer all the blog posts, I hate it when people ask questions and no one bothers to answer them. I get a lot out of reading the comments. I read Ray Johnson’s post and I checked out the truth about abs.
I am on Ray’s newletter list anyway, and he is working on me to be an affiliate for his products – not that I have ever met him, but he has some nice products.
I am real interested in CPA type stuff and I am going back over to the abs site. And, I want to get your outsource guide but I have to wait until the 15th. Hope you still have it available in two days.
Oh yeah, nice resource you gave us on the 21 places. Great stuff.
Errmmm… I wasn’t in Vegas, never been yet but will be in August. I was asked to be a part of that event but I had to turn it down because of a vacation. Wish we had met tho you sound like a pretty cool person. And yes we’ll still have the outsourcing thing available.
Hi Justin
I guess those ‘androids’ of yours will be working their buts off testing and tweaking this little lot…or is the Boss man going to get his own hands dirty?

GREAT way to put things! Thanks for commenting
I just really thank for your post because almost place you post is so good and bring good result for people.
Other way, you can SEO for your website/blog with good keywords. It can keep your visitor come back on other time.
.
If you buy traffic, that’s mean you just get visitor one time, someone will visit again at second time. But not almost of them come back with you on second time.
.
Then, what we can do for keep visitor always.
.
Just easy.
.
You can optimazation your article and post . If you content is good. Needed with them, they will come with you.

Thanks for the compliment, and I wouldn’t try to take it all in right away. Take good notes, make mind maps, create to do lists, and just take in what you need to complete the first thing on the to-do list first. For example installing a blog, then move on to step 2.

Love the post.
Especially like your first comment. that your income went up when you stopped buying ebooks and started buying traffic.
My issue is testing. I am horrible at it. I don’t do it really. Probably leaving a ton of money on the table.
Maybe I can hire that out when I get your ebook
Yeah either that or look for a partner… My strengths are on the creative side and I just happen to love split-testing becuase it’s like a video game for me. But for other logical thinking or techy stuff I use other people. Sometimes having a team or 2-3 people can be a lot better then just one person even with the income split!
Seems like taffic doesn’t cook the cake. I’ve got a small amount of traffic and despite trying several techniques I’m not increasing it and my first 6 opt-ins are churning throught the follow-up messages ( the first now up to number 13n !) but NOBODY has bought the front end product. I’ve even had russell bronson’s coaches help design the copy. NOW yes, 6 is too low to see a conversion rate but I am so disillusioned by it all. Think I have to dump the niche. Do you think I should resort to buying traffic ?
Kath’s last blog post..The History of Pasta in Italian Food
Yeah… it’s WAY to early for you to be getting upset. It’ll take at least AT LEAST 30 – 50 subscribers before you start seeing any sales. At a 1% conversion rate which is kind of an industry minimum you’ll need 100 people to make 1 sale. At just a 2% conversion rate which is a little more on the high side you’ll need 50 people to make 1 sale. Even at a BLISTERING 10% conversion you would need at least 10 people to make 1 sale. So have faith and keep fighting, you’re on your way. As my wife constantly beats into me “Rome wasn’t built in a day.”
Jason,
Buying your way to profit definitely works. I have been working a long time to get free traffic. It is going well but I will take the jump soon to pay per click.
Thanks for the post

I’m guessing you meant to say Justin instead of Jason… It’s happened to me my whole life. I bet if I switched my name to Jason people would call me Justin haha
.
For me I think buying traffic is much more dependable… Less all out there on my own feeling. Like I can call someone and say hey WTF why isn’t my link showing. Where free traffic your just like shit I gotta do that all over again! They are both good and have their places. Don’t think either is better just highlighting some of the benefits to encourage more people to make the jump.
Great Post.
Pay per click is going to be something I learn but I am going to master a couple of other things first.

Have you sold any monster priced websites lately?
Prepaid Texting’s last blog post..Unlimited Prepaid Texting
No, no big flips recently… Tho with how much I owe in taxes I will be having to do either a couple 4 figure flips or one big 5 figure flip. Uncle Sam punches hard!
How is your site flipping weekend coming along?
I am afraid once I start paying for traffic it will get addicting and then I won’t work on getting free traffic.

We got like 20 or 30 people that bought, but most are taking the DVD option instead of coming. Now we only got like 7 people who are actually going to attend… Going to be awesome for those that attend as the DVD’s will just show the content but it’s different when you are there live.
Great blog. Thanks for the new old ideas and not the old tired ones.
I stumbled you too….
Yeah I’m a bit sick and tired of the rehashery myself! Thanks for the stumble love!
great post. What do you think the best way to increase traffic on a ecommerce site for fragrances? Thanks
Same way you would with any other website… Just targetting your own related keywords or urls and writing an relative ad.
Justin
I know you say you started as little as $2/day. Does that still apply to today’s market and if you were to do it which networks would you target to start.
Bruno Auger’s last blog post..Why is Forum Marketing Effective?
I would target Yahoo, MSN, and ASK because they all have coupons that you can use for some initial free traffic. In fact the 3 of them together I believe would give you $75 in free traffic which is more then $2/day. Also all three of them have lower cost clicks then Google since Google is the big dog.
.
Click prices have gone up but if you are creative about your keyword research you can still find hundreds and thousands of keywords with click prices below 10/20 cents each.
.
We still to this day start off campaigns with tiny budgets like that. I don’t think anyone should start a campaign with more then a $5 per day budget unless they just have hundreds of dollars to waste in testing. The key when starting out is to start really small, systematize, and then scale up.
Hi Justin,
I just burned through $175 trying out ask.com ppc ads and got zero conversions — the traffic quality seemed really bad. In fact, looking through my tracking I didn’t see even one click that came from ask.com — it looks like they just farmed out the clicks to a bunch of parked domains and junky sites.
I was direct linking to a medical cpa offer.
Do you have any tips specific to ask.com ppc that I can use to at least get back to even?
Thanks!
Joseph
Great article. Would be interested in your training videos (android) but price is a bit steep and missed the birthday promotion. Do you have another promotion coming up?

Right now we don’t have any promotions planned, sorry.
I got this cool PPC Campaign Builder Software that allows me to create Adgroups instantly. It allows me to filter negative keywords and create adgroups easily, pretty cool software. Do you use any PPC campaign software. You should try this software.
I am going to go back to PPC advertising this week. I am busy doing Articles with Article Submitter and Submitting to Directories today.
